08/02/2024

January was a month of major political shifts and leadership change in Bihar and Jharkhand.

-Leader of the Janata Dal (United), Nitish Kumar, recently made a classic flip flop move/turnaround and decided to disengage from the opposition's INDIA bloc, aligning instead with the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA). Nitish Kumar ended his ties with the grand alliance at the end of last month and decided to support the NDA again. The path of BJP and JD (U) in Bihar is paved with numerous political challenges especially in the light of crucial 2024 Lok Sabha elections coming up. Both the BJP and JD(U) have a lot of complicated political issues to deal with before the elections, including the allocation of parliamentary seats among themselves and their allies.

- At an event last month, Prashant Kishor, the founder of Jan Suraaj Abhiyan, announced that the political platform would field 75 candidates from the extremely backward castes (EBCs) in the 2025 Bihar assembly elections. He initiated a 3,500-km-long padyatra across Bihar starting on October 2, 2022.

- The Jharkhand state government, led by Chief Minister Champai Soren, has won a vote of confidence in the state Assembly. CM Champai Soren garnered support from 47 MLAs. He has taken over from Hemant Soren, who is under investigation for suspected involvement in money laundering cases.
