Muzaffar Ali’s most applauded film Umrao Jaan (1981) was based on Mirza Hadi Ruswa’s urdu novel Umrao Jaan Ada, a fascinating tragedy that has intrigued filmmakers. Ali’s version was the third Indian film on the literary gem, the previous two being Zindigi ya Toofan and Mehndi (both 1958) where Nutan and Rajshree essayed the title role respectively.
The 1981 film is also widely regarded as having the finest representation of old Lucknow culture, besides Ray’s Shatranj Ke Khiladi (1978). Rekha won the coveted Best actress national award for the film, in what is considered as one of her best performances.

Sharmila Tagore created a sensation by appearing in a bikini for Shakti Samanta’s An Evening In Paris, a romantic thriller shot in Paris. She doubled the impact by appearing in a bikini on the cover of Filmfare magazine the same year, creating both controversy as well as spectacular success for the film which also had exceptional music soundtrack by O P Nayyar.

A copy of this rare six sheet poster of the Shakti Samanta classic first appeared at the 2014 Osians ‘Greatest Indian Show on Earth’ series auction where it was picked up by Bollywood Baadshah Shah Rukh Khan. Contrary to popular belief, it wasn’t Pramod Chakravorty’s Dream Girl (1978) that assigned the now-famous ‘Dream-Girl’ prefix to actress Hema Malini; it was given to her in her very first Hindi film Sapnon Ka Saudagar by producer B Ananthaswami for the film’s publicity.

Hema Malini’s meteoric rise thereafter sustained the ‘Dream Girl’ epithet accorded to her as she delivered hit after hit at the box office.
