A few years ago, I met two retirees.
One lived in a magnificent bungalow.
The other lived in a modest apartment.
If you judged only by appearances, the first gentleman looked far wealthier.
But after speaking to both of them, I discovered something interesting.
The owner of the bungalow spent most of his retirement worrying.
"What if my savings don't last?"
"Medical expenses keep increasing."
"I don't want to become financially dependent."
The gentleman in the apartment?
He smiled through the entire conversation.
Every month, his investments generated income.
His expenses were planned.
His children were financially independent.
He wasn't constantly checking market movements.
He wasn't calculating whether he could afford another vacation.
He simply enjoyed retirement.
That's when I realised something.
Retirement isn't about how big your house is.
It's about how peaceful your mind is.
I've met people with enormous wealth and constant anxiety.
I've also met people with moderate wealth and complete financial confidence.
The difference wasn't income.
The difference was planning.
Because retirement doesn't ask,
"How much did you earn?"
It quietly asks,
"How wisely did you prepare?"
That, in my opinion, is the true definition of wealth.
