67% Jump: EPFO's Wage Ceiling Just Went From ₹15,000 to ₹25,000
The Union Cabinet has approved raising the EPFO wage ceiling from ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 per month- — a number that hasn’t moved since 2014. It's official now, not just a proposal sitting in a file.
Think about that gap. Twelve years. Minimum wages in several states had quietly crept right up to that old ₹15,000 mark, which meant a massive chunk of India's formal workforce was technically earning just enough fall outside mandatory EPF, EPS and EDLI coverage, that is not a small gap in social security — that's over 51 lakh people who were sitting outside the safety net simply because a number hadn't been updated in over a decade.
What I find interesting is the timing. This isn't happening in isolation it comes on the back of a broader push toward formalizing employment and getting more workers into structured, portable social security.
A ₹10,000 jump in the ceiling is the kind of move that quietly reshapes take-home pay calculations, PF contributions and employer costs across thousands of companies, especially in sectors like retail, hospitality and manufacturing where wages often sit right in that band.
For employers, this means payroll structures built around the old ceiling will need a relook. For employees, it means a real expansion of retirement and insurance cover that many didn't have access to before.
Sometimes the most consequential policy changes aren't the loudest ones. This is one of them.
