GRIHA Council GRIHA(Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment)- India's national rating system for Green Buildings.

GRIHA Council, is mandated to promote development of buildings and habitats in India through GRIHA. GRIHA Council an independent platform for the interaction on scientific and administrative issues related to sustainable habitats in the Indian subcontinent. It was founded by TERI (The Energy and Resources Institute, New Delhi) with support from MNRE (Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Government of India) along with a handful of experts in the sustainability of built environment from across the country.

A Roundtable Discussion at the GRIHA Regional Conclave, Pune, held on 30 September 2026, brought together architects, engineers, sustainability professionals, manufacturers, researchers, developers and policymakers from across Maharashtra’s built environment sector under the theme “Moving Towards Low Carbon Transition: Business Strategy, Climate Finance and Building Stakeholder Capacity to Derive Carbon Value.”

The discussion explored how business leadership, climate finance, sustainable building practices and emerging carbon markets can accelerate the low-carbon transition, with a focus on integrating sustainability into core business strategies, mobilising green capital, strengthening stakeholder capacity, moving beyond certification-driven approaches and unlocking economic value from carbon performance.

Through such dialogues, GRIHA Council aims to foster collaboration and translate ideas into meaningful action. We look forward to building shared synergies and working together to advance pathways towards a sustainable and low-carbon future.

A Plenary Session titled 'Scaling Sustainability: From Green Buildings to Resilient Cities and Infrastructure' was held during the GRIHA Regional Conclave, Pune on 30th September 2026.

This session explored how green building certifications deliver measurable reductions in energy, carbon, water and resource consumption. It brought together architects, consultants and government officials across the buildings and infrastructure sectors to share insights, identify implementation gaps and discuss strategic approaches for accelerating the transition towards a low-carbon future for Resilient Cities and Infrastructure.

The Inaugural Session of the GRIHA Regional Conclave, Pune, held on 30 September 2026, centred around the overarching theme “Pathways for a Low Carbon Future: Buildings to Infrastructure", commenced with the auspicious lighting of the lamp by eminent dignitaries.

The session brought together Mr. Shravan Hardikar, IAS, Managing Director, Maharashtra Metro Rail Corp Ltd. (MAHA-METRO); Prof. Sunil Bhagwat, Director, Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Pune; Dr. Priti Dhanwat, Dean (Faculty of Architecture), Vishwakarma University - VU, Pune; and Ar. Dinesh Zope, Professor & Core Committee Member, DY PATIL DEEMED TO BE UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE (DYPUSOA). Discussions emphasised collective responsibility, effective implementation and enforcement of environmental policies, balancing sustainability with economic considerations, and integrating sustainability into architectural education through stronger industry–academia collaboration.

Mr. Sanjay Seth, Vice President & CEO, GRIHA Council and Executive Director – Strategy & Partnerships, TERI - The Energy and Resources Institute, highlighted the need to move beyond policy formulation towards effective implementation. Vote of Thanks was delivered by Ms. Shabnam Bassi, Deputy CEO & Secretary, GRIHA Council and Director, Sustainable Buildings Division, TERI.

The session concluded with an overview of the Council’s latest developments and initiatives towards advancing sustainable and low-carbon practices, shared by Mr. Akash Deep, Deputy General Manager & Treasurer, GRIHA Council.

The conclave also marked the signing of Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) between GRIHA Council and Vishwakarma University, Pune, and DY Patil Deemed to be University School of Architecture (DYPUSOA), strengthening collaboration in sustainable development, knowledge exchange, capacity building and industry–academia engagement. GRIHA-rated projects were also felicitated during the conclave, with the respective projects receiving their GRIHA rating plaques.

Dr. Ankit Bhalla, Manager, GRIHA Council, participated in the workshop on “Air Quality Monitoring arising out of Construction & Demolition Waste”, organized by the Construction Industry Development Council (CIDC) on 28 September 2026 at Faridabad, Haryana.

During the workshop, Dr. Bhalla presented GRIHA Council’s work and initiatives aimed at mitigating air and soil pollution associated with construction activities, highlighting approaches for responsible construction practices and environmental management.

The workshop brought together stakeholders from across the construction and environmental sectors, providing a valuable platform for technical deliberations, exchange of experiences and discussion on practical measures to address pollution arising from construction and demolition activities.

Dr. Bhalla also actively contributed to the discussions with other participating stakeholders, sharing insights from GRIHA’s experience and engaging in deliberations on potential solutions and recommendations.

The workshop served as an important platform for collaborative dialogue towards strengthening sustainable construction practices and supporting improved environmental outcomes across the construction sector.

GRIHA Regional Conclave at Pune commenced with a Fireside Chat session on “India’s Environmental Policy, Legislation and Achieving Low Carbon Outcomes”, which explored India’s evolving environmental policy and legislative framework, highlighting key regulations and policy instruments that support sustainable development, climate action, resource efficiency, and the transition towards a low-carbon future.

The session was moderated by Mr. Sanjay Seth, Vice President & CEO, GRIHA Council, and Senior Director, Sustainable Infrastructure Programme, TERI – The Energy and Resources Institute. He emphasised that the need of the hour is not merely to formulate climate policies, but to ensure their effective implementation on the ground.

Dr. Prasad Modak, Managing Director, Environmental Management Centre Pvt. Ltd., highlighted the need to establish a clear link between policies, plans and projects to enable effective implementation of environmental standards. He also noted that beyond regulations, investor pressure can play a significant role in driving better compliance.

Ar. Anagha Paranjape-Purohit, Director, VK Design and Projects Pvt. Ltd. and Founder, VK:e environmental, Pune, highlighted that India already has robust standards and policies, but stronger mechanisms are required to translate them into effective on-ground implementation.
