GUN-MILAN (Compatibility) FOR A SUCCESSFUL MARRIAGE
(FULL)
Compatibility plays a major role in any kind of relationship; be it Friendship, Marriage or Live-in Relationships. One should always check individual horoscopes of the boy and the girl for the below mentioned factors with Guna Milan: -
1) Health and Longevity of the girl and the boy.
2) Quality of married life.
3) Fortune, prosperity and marital happiness.
4) Malefic planets influence i.e. Mars, Saturn, Rahu, Ketu on marital house i.e. 7H.
5) 5H or Progeny.
6) Divorce or Vidhur yoga or Vaidvaya yoga (widow hood yoga).
7) Manglik / Kuja Dosha.
After checking all these points in individual horoscope of the girl and the boy, one should go for Guna Matching.
Besides Guna milan, one should always see the strength of the horoscope on the marriage front i.e. if Guna milan is on higher side but if there is no child/santaan yoga in both or any of the horoscopes OR if one of them has Alp Mrityu yoga or no benefic influence on 7H (vivah bhav) OR 5H (Santaan bhav) or 8H (Aayu bhav), then Guna milan holds very less importance. You have often noticed that sometimes divorce occurs in marriages with Guna Milan of 27 points or above.
ASHTA GUNA MATCHING (ANCIENT WAY)
Ashta-koot = Ashta + Koot = Eight + Guna
Guna Milaan or Ashtakoot is used for judging the compatibility between prospective partners for harmonious and blissful married life. It is matching of 8 factors, which are derived from the Janma Nakshatra (Moon Star of the native at the birth time) and the moon sign i.e placement of the planet Moon in specific sign in both the horoscopes of the boy and the girl.
The 8 factors for Ashta-koot or Guna matching are as follows: -
(I) Varna = 1 point
(II) Vasya = 2 points
(III) Tara = 3 points
(IV) Yoni = 4 points
(V) Graha Maitri = 5 points
(VI) Gana = 6 points
(VII) Bhakut = 7 points
(VIII) Nadi = 8 points

THE FIRST IMPORTANT GUNA IS: -
(I) VARNA: - (Moon Rashi Based)
Matching of the Castes / Mental or Work ability – This contributes 1 point in Guna Milan.
This shows the basic potential of a person and the person's inherent skills, abilities and compatibility between personal egos of the partners. If the Varna of both the man and woman falls in the same category, then it is considered auspicious, indicating the emotional bonding between them which is an important part of the successful marriage. A girl belonging to a higher Varna mated to a boy of a lesser Varna will score low in this (though one should keep in mind the concept of Desh, Kaal, Patra in this regard).
In ancient times, the personalities of the individuals are divided into four classes depending on their potential and inherent abilities.
1) Brahmin or Priests – All jal tatwa rashis are Brahmins i.e.

3) Vaishya or Merchants / Business people – All earthy tatwa rashis are Vaishyas i.e.
2 (Ta**us), 6 (Virgo), 10 (Capricorn)
They belong to the professional or business class of people who perform all the useful and economic functions of society. They are skilled in different crafts and professions, signifying tremendous abilities.
4) Shudra or Laborers / Service Class – All airy tatwa rashis are Vaishyas i.e.
3 (Gemini), 7 (Libra), 11 (Aquarius)
They belong to the normal hard-working class who had a tremendous sense of service to society. Majority of the work in society fell upon them; hence they also have an inherent sense of responsibility.
Note: - Here, one should match the varnas on the basis of the classification of the moon’s placement in the rashis rather than any relation to any particular caste or creed in our modern society.

Mutual Love / Relative influence of one on the other. It contributes 7 points in Guna Milan.
It is the study of comparison between the positions of moon sign in each other's chart to decide whether the pair is compatible enough to lead a blissful life in all respect.
For this purposes, calculation of the position of one's Moon Sign from other's Moon Sign is determined.
In Bhakoot Dosha, sign occupied by the moon in the horoscope of boy is compared to that of girl’s horoscope with regard to its relative numerical position such as: -
Same Rashi (1/1 axis or conjunction) - 7
Sextile (3/11 axis) - 7
Square (4/10 axis) - 7
Opposition (1/7 axis) - 7
Semi Sextile (2/12 axis) - 0

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
THE LAST AND MOST IMPORTANT GUNA IS: -
(VIII) NADI: -
Intrinsic Energy / Possibility of child birth (Progeny) / Compatibility between Life forces (Nadi / Pulse). It contributes 8 points in Guna Milan.
Imbalance in Nadi Milan is called Nadi Dosha. Nadi dosha deals with the genetic compatibility between the couple to produce healthy progeny after marriage. It shows the pulse and nervous energy indicating the physiological and heredity factor.
Nadi Dosha exists if boy and girl are having same Nadi. It is specially checked for Brahmins.
Even it is scientifically proven that if girl and boy have same Nadi/Prakriti then, their offspring will be physically weaker.
In ancient Vedic times, the main purpose of marriage was to produce healthy children and to continue the family lineage. In this age of modern science and technology, where the most advanced medical facilities are available, this score should be considered in light of this factor.
However, it is not accurate to reject a proposal for marriage just because the girl and boy have same Nadi as in the Shastras there are several cancellations to this effect. In addition, in those relationships where birth of children is not required, this score can be completely discarded from the overall points and the points scored.
For purpose of this test, life forces with their nakshatras are categorized as follows: -
Adi or Beginning Madhya or Middle Antya or End
(Vatta) (Pitta) (Kapha)
Ashwini (1) Bharani (2) Krittika (3)
