‘NAIVE ART - Ode to the Unknown Artist’ (11”x11” inches, 124 pages)

Every coffee table book publisher aspires to have at least a couple of art-books on their list. Luckily for us, this opportunity came early!

Dr. Parthasarthi Shome, an illustrious economist of the International Monetary Fund; Professor of the London School of Economics; former Chief Economist, Revenue & Tax Advisor to Her Majesty (the Queen of England’s) Government and the (then) Chairman of the Tax Reform Committee of India (Union Minister of State Rank Official) approached us in 2014. He was a connoisseur and collector of Naive Art. Exquisite paintings from all over the world adorned every inch of the numerous walls of his palatial and multiple homes. His mother was also an artist - but being shy by nature, her paintings had never been shared publicly.

Dr. Shome wanted us to curate (& publish) an exquisite coffee table book comprising of his mother’s (& his own) collection of paintings to commemorate her 90th birthday.

While initially, the project sounded simple and doable, we later encountered several operational challenges. Dr. Shome did not have ‘digital images’ (high resolution photographs) of a single painting. His huge collection of over 450 paintings was spread across 3-4 houses located in different cities. While many paintings had ‘glass frames’; some of the works were painted on the glass itself. Photographing such paintings was virtually impossible as the camera flash reflected on the glass.

To cut the long story short - when after six months, Dr. Shome saw the first printed copy of his book, he exclaimed - ‘Paintings in the book are looking even better than the originals. It appears that they have been washed or cleaning’. When we narrated the actual process of how we photographed and digitally cleaned all the paintings (and also repaired the frames of many of them) he was astonished by our ingenuity and dedication. At the release function of the book, Dr. Shome’s mother blessed our team profusely for we had not only reproduced her works in our book, but ‘given them life’!

What more can any service provider ask for from the client. It was a touching experience for us.

(1). Dr. Shome’s mother left for her heavenly abode just a few months after this book was released.

(2). Dr. Shome’s mother belonged to the illustrious family of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore).
