General Inspectorate for Immigration has referred a statement to a new Romanian immigration measure introduced through Government Emergency Ordinance No. 32/2026. It allows certain foreign nationals whose legal residence expired to regularize their status in Romania until 31 December 2026.

Key points:

1. It applies mainly to foreigners whose long-stay work visa expired or single work/residence permit expired, and who have not been issued a return order.

2. Eligible persons may apply to extend their temporary residence for work purposes without obtaining a new long-stay visa.

3. They must first report to a local office of the General Inspectorate for Immigration within 60 days from the ordinance taking effect(ie 27 of April 2026) to declare their current residential address in Romania.

4. Authorities stated that foreigners who come forward to regularize their situation generally will not face fines or immediate return measures while the process is underway.

5. Additional eligibility conditions may apply, including security and public-health checks.

More official immigration information is available through Romanian General Inspectorate for Immigration (IGI).
