Two Recent Murder Cases Raise an Uncomfortable Question: Should Families Verify Character Before Marriage?

When families evaluate a prospective son-in-law or daughter-in-law, they usually verify:

✔ Employment
✔ Income
✔ Family background
✔ Social status
But they often overlook what matters most:

❓ Hidden relationships
❓ Lifestyle habits
❓ Financial behaviour
❓ Past conduct
Another common mistake is placing blind trust in relatives, friends, or even marriage bureaus. Recommendations can be helpful, but they are not a substitute for independent verification. Too often, families rely solely on someone's word without conducting any inquiries of their own and sometimes, that blind trust can have devastating consequences.
In my profession, I have seen families spend months planning weddings worth lakhs of rupees, yet hesitate to spend a fraction of that amount on verifying the person their child is going to marry.
A pre-matrimonial investigation is not about distrust.
It is about informed decision-making.
Just as companies conduct due diligence before major investments, families should consider verifying facts before making one of the most important decisions of their lives.
