One of the things that defines a strong business is how it allocates its earnings.

This archival snapshot of the Delhi Cloth & General Mills offers a clear view into that philosophy. Across decades, every rupee was distributed with the intent of supporting employees, contributing to the nation through taxes, rewarding shareholders, and being reinvested to build future capacity. Alongside this, the company’s growth kept pace with, and often exceeded, the trajectory of a developing India.

It reflects an approach grounded in discipline, balance, and long-term thinking, where growth was never isolated from responsibility. Because the true measure of growth always lies in how it is shared.

In the days of home economics classes, sewing wasn’t just a hobby - it was a life skill taught in classes in schools across the country.

A generation learned to cut, stitch, and create their own clothes. And in 1960, DCM tapped into that spirit with a Dress Design Contest that turned everyday consumers into designers.

The marketing team certainly knew its audience well. There was fabric. And there was creativity woven into the fabric of India.

This 1890 handwritten balance sheet for the first year of the erstwhile Delhi Cloth & General Mills is one of its earliest records. At the time, financial records were maintained by hand in ledgers before typewritten and digital systems came on the scene. Documents like these were working records, neat and accurate, because they formed the basis of all business decisions.

Looking at the contents, one can see that even at this early stage, the business was already operational. There is share capital, indicating investor backing. There are assets like land, buildings, and machinery, pointing to early operations. It records cash balances and liabilities, showing resources and commitments. And yet, what stands out is the discipline in how the business was set up. Clear accounting, defined ownership, and careful record-keeping from the outset.

Getting the fundamentals right early on supported the company’s growth into a multi-business enterprise that contributed significantly to India’s industrial development. And it all began here, with one man’s beautiful cursive penmanship on these 136-year-old pages.

About a decade into leading an independent nation, the Indian government decided to hold up a mirror to the country.

It was called ‘India 1958’

An enormous Industrial, Agricultural and Technical Exhibition in Pragati Maidan, New Delhi, designed to showcase the country’s progress since 1947.

Designed as a public-facing event, it invited citizens, industry leaders, and policymakers to explore how India’s capabilities were taking shape in these sectors. ‘India 1958’ was even commemorated on an Indian postage stamp.

The exhibition brought together a wide range of sectors from textiles and engineering to agriculture, with over 300 pavilions and displays. For many visitors, it was a rare opportunity to see this scale of development up close.

Here, at this landmark event, the erstwhile Delhi Cloth & General Mills stall won a distinguished prize for presenting its textile capabilities and innovations. DCM’s participation reflected the role Indian industry was beginning to play in shaping economic growth, while also building public confidence in the country’s trajectory. It proved that if you want to see how far you’ve come, all you need is a good mirror.

In April 1934, Sir Shri Ram (seated extreme left) was sent by the government as part of a trade delegation to Afghanistan.

This was pre-independence, when Indian industry was still evolving and opportunities for international engagement were limited. Such delegations played an important role in building regional economic ties and exploring new markets. They helped open channels for dialogue and trade beyond India’s borders.

Sir Shri Ram’s inclusion reflected the confidence placed in him as a representative of Indian enterprise. It also signalled the growing presence of Indian business voices in regional economic discussions.

This moment is a reminder that the roots and spirit of enterprise at DCM Shriram have long been aligned with a broader vision. One that looks outward and contributes to India’s evolving economic journey.

In May 1956, a DCM Technical Conference brought together leaders from government, industry, and science at a pivotal moment in India’s journey. The inaugural speech was made by Mr. T. T. Krishnamachari, the Indian Minister of Finance. Seated behind him are Sir Shri Ram, Dr. Bharat Ram, and Dr. Vikram Sarabhai. The conference saw the presence of renowned scientists and technical experts from research centres around India.

This convergence reflected a shared commitment to building India’s industrial and scientific capabilities through collaboration and knowledge exchange. At a time when the country was laying the foundations of its economic future, this platform played a vital role in shaping direction and intent. If this event proved anything, it was that progress has always been rooted in partnerships, curiosity, and a willingness to learn and build together.

From the archives, a vintage DCM Silk Mills advertisement for Terene suiting fabric. It was a time when modern fabric blends were becoming popular among the emerging Indian professional. Its crease resistance, structure, easy care, and durability were qualities that suited growing corporate routines.

In the midst of fashion magazines and textile ads, this company reminded their target audience that one’s character should be just as crease resistant and durable as the fabric they wore.

Lines aren’t always visible.
They can be expectations, assumptions, doubts or biases about what women can or cannot do.

Across DCM Shriram, women continue to move beyond them every day.
By challenging perceptions. By proving possibilities.

This Women’s Day, we celebrate the women who choose to cross the line.

Women face many barriers. Some seem like simple, innocent looking lines, but they feel like they cannot be moved.

Until someone decides they can .

Watch this space to see the shift.
