World Monuments Fund presents: Historic Water Systems of the Future: The Case of Bijapur, India

・・・

Join Amita Baig, Executive Director of World Monuments Fund India, and Rana Safvi, prolific author and translator specializing in the culture, history, and monuments of India, for a spotlight event on the historic city of Bijapur and the unique water systems which allowed its millions of inhabitants to thrive in the searing heat of the Deccan Plateau.

As the global water crisis looms, the reactivation of historic water systems and the updating of traditional practices can make a helpful contribution to the challenge. At the same time, it can contribute to changing our water consciousness and help activate a new ethic of care and conservation. The Traditional Water Systems of the Deccan Plateau were included on the 2020 World Monuments Watch to illustrate the potential for historic water systems to help address the water crisis for contemporary communities.

Restoration Challenge: 🦇 🦇 🦇 Bats are amazing creatures and part of a healthy ecosystem, but they definitely make quite a mess! These images show how years of bat excreta can leave hard to remove stains. Our expert team is trying various techniques to remove these stains, but we seek suggestions and advice from the restoration community on best practices. If you have any proven methods of removing such stains from basalt stone, or know someone who does, please message us or leave a comment. Let’s see if social media can help overcome this challenge. Thank you!

St George's Cemetery & The Palmer Family (part 3/3)
------------------------------------
Apart from William Palmer’s tomb, there are four more tombs in St. George’s cemetery belonging to Palmer’s family. They are of Hester Palmer (Wife of William palmer), Hastings Little Palmer, William Arrow Palmer, Nelly Palmer, Amine Palmer. Connection between gender and architecture is evident as graves of male members are built in stone while softer materials like bricks and marble is used for graves of female members of the family. While Obelisk with sharp angles, rising from a square base, sets the tomb of William palmer aside from rest of the tombs. Hester Palmer’s tomb is a raised ledger with a crucifix on it. Rest four tombs are chest tombs resembling rectangular boxes.

Hester Palmer (1st September 1817 – 6th September 1877)

Hastings Little Palmer (died 31st July 1862)

William arrow Palmer (16th December 1811 – 12th July 1860)

Nelly Palmer (3rd December 1855 – 16th July 1858)

Amine Palmer (10th May 1834 – 30th June 1866)

St. George’s Cemetery & The Palmer Family (part2/3)
-------------------------------
Mr. William Palmer’s tomb
Adjoining St. George’s church is an old cemetery which contains the monuments of many old residents of Chudderghaut, one of the most noteworthy being  that of the celebrated William Palmer, or ‘King Palmer’ as he used to be styled in his day.

The following is a verbatim copy of the remarkable inscription on Mr. Palmer’s tomb: - ‘’This monument contains the remains of William Palmer, who died on 20th November 1867, in his 87th year. He had been a resident of Hyderabad for nearly 70 years, where he was prominently known, and his memory requires no record. But he desires anxiously that the goodness of Hester Palmer, his wife, towards him, who survived him, should be known by this record drawn up on his death-bed. She was his comfort for the last 20 years of his life, which was involved generally in distress and difficulties. Her strong mind and good sense supported him during his sickness, and contributed to prolong his life, and her private means were employed to maintain him in ease and comfort when he was penniless, as indeed they were, subsequently, to educate some of his grand-children who she has loved, though not connected by blood with them, as if they were her own, and which she continues to do. May the blessing of Almighty and Most Merciful God be with her and her grand-children, and us all!’’

Along the southern portion of Karnataka's coastline, lies a region known as South Canara. Once a thriving agrarian society, this landscape is till date dotted with mansions that have stood the test of time. These traditional manor houses are locally known as 'Guthu' (meaning esteemed) houses thus reflecting the social stature of the predominantly Bunt owners. We been documenting these mansions that range from being 100 to even over 500 years old. Nestled harmoniously amongst picturesque backdrops, these mansions bring to light valuable traditional knowledge and building systems.

Ganesha Habbada Shubhashayagalu! This is the Ganesha Idol at the entrance of The Jaya Chamarajendra Art Gallery, Mysore. He is the guardian deity of the Art Gallery and the extender of benevolent welcome to all visitors. The idol is more than 100 years old and was bestowed this honour at the site under the rule of H H Krishna Raja Wadiyar III (1799-1868). The idol is made using a mixture of sawdust bonded together by Maravajra (a historic form of glue). He has a serpent belt around his waist, a broken tusk in one hand and as a blessing to devotees in his other hand, a Abhayahasta. It confirms the Dhyana sloka which states that he is Pashankushadhari, Lambodara, Sindhuravarni, Mushika Vahana et al. It is moulded in such a way as prescribed in the sacred texts known as Ganesha Puranas which was translated to the regional language Kannada from the original Sanskrit text by the late H H Jayachamarajendra Wadiyar for the benefit of his subjects.

Restoring the stucco work at Gagan Mahal, Anegundi, Hampi World Heritage site using traditional building materials and techniques by trained local craftsman.

The approach adopted has been to conserve the original stucco work as much as possible. Multiple layers of lime wash were gently removed to expose the stucco with all its details. Damaged stucco art elements are being repaired, and missing stucco is being recreated (only where there are enough evidences / references for recreation), while ensuring that the new stucco can be differentiated by the finish.
