Unakoti is famous for the innumerous rock carvings of various Gods and Goddesses from Hindu Mythology. Legend has it that Lord Shiva , along with other Gods and Goddesses (1 crore in total) had set out for the holy city of Kashi (Varanasi) and had rested for the night in Unakoti. Shiva asked all the Gods to wake up before sunrise the next day however he became furious when nobody except him had woken up before sunrise. Angered by this, the Lord cursed all the other Gods to turn into stone.
An annual festival called the Ashokashtami Mela is held here annually in the month of April, attracting plenty of tourists and pilgrims alike.
