Singaporean researchers have developed an experimental system that generates electricity from falling rain by capturing the energy of droplets as they move through specially designed vertical channels. The goal is to turn rainfall, which is usually treated as runoff, into a usable energy source.
Unlike traditional hydropower, this technology does not rely on rivers, dams, or large volumes of flowing water. Instead, it operates at a micro scale, allowing electricity generation even from small amounts of rain.
The system works by guiding rainwater through narrow tubes where electrical charges form due to contact and separation effects. This process enables energy generation with minimal infrastructure and space requirements.
Laboratory tests suggest the method can be far more efficient than conventional hydropower when measured per unit of water used. This makes it especially suitable for dense urban environments where land and natural water flow are limited.
While still in early development, researchers see potential applications on rooftops, drainage systems, and vertical structures. The innovation highlights how cities can rethink natural resources and diversify clean, decentralized energy solutions.
