There are many lived experiences of survivors across the world and in India. Based on our ongoing work with NGOs and organisations in the anti‑trafficking ecosystem, here is an Space2Grow’s article with some key learnings and ideas for change.

India’s gaming sector is expanding rapidly, and so are the vulnerabilities children face within it. Our new report, “𝗡𝗼𝘁 𝗮 𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱’𝘀 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝘆: 𝗚𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗥𝗶𝘀𝗸𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗿𝗲𝗻”, is our attempt to shine a light on this largely overlooked space, where risks are evolving faster than responses.

The report was launched by 𝗦𝗵𝗿𝗶. 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝘆𝗮𝗻𝗸 𝗞𝗮𝗻𝗼𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗼, National Human Rights Commission Member, emphasised the need for child-specific rules and regulations that are designed for the complex and evolving gaming ecosystem.

Sameer Desai, a video games industry expert, shared his views as a foreword that speaks to the industry’s fast-evolving nature and the critical need to centre child safety in gaming design.

Inclusive Skilling has been a critical theme within the work at Space2Grow. Our work as a technical expert on the skilling program for survivors of trafficking has been a learning journey for all stakeholders involved. Investors, implementing partners, skill development organisations, and survivors- all came together to design a program that enables affirmative action within the skill development ecosystem. Sharing our insights through a journey mapping- modelling of the inclusive skilling program.

🚩 Commemorated annually to recall women’s contributions in several fields, raise awareness on gender equality issues and promote women’s rights and empowerment, this day serves as a significant reminder of how far women have come and the gaps that still need to be addressed to achieve parity in social, economic and other spheres.

At Space 2 Grow, we focus this year on the 𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵-𝗳𝗮𝗰𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝘃𝗶𝗼𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 that women face in India. According to a 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝘆 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝘆 𝗦𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲𝟮𝗚𝗿𝗼𝘄 in which 𝟮𝟳𝟬𝟬 𝘄𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻 were surveyed pan India it was found that:

❗️About 60% of participants experienced some form of cyber abuse on said platforms
❗️Among them, only 38% shared their experience with their family, peers or the police
❗️Of those who did, only 10% reported the incident on the national cybercrime reporting portal

Data suggests that worldover, between 16 and 58 percent of women have experienced technology-facilitated violence such as s*xtortion, image-based abuse, doxxing (publishing private information online), cyberbullying, s*xual harassment, cyber stalking, online grooming etc. Another research study found that most girls report their first experience of social media harassment between the ages of 14 to 16 years.

Although women have been facing violence the world over, the forms of violence have been evolving with its effects getting compounded.

𝗔𝗶𝘀𝗵𝘄𝗮𝗿𝘆𝗮 𝗗𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗿𝗲, 𝗜𝗣𝗦 , 𝗗𝗲𝗽𝘂𝘁𝘆 𝗗𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿 - 𝗜𝟰𝗖, 𝗠𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗛𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗔𝗳𝗳𝗮𝗶𝗿𝘀, 𝗚𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗮, at our AI Webinar, reiterated that AI is not just making child s*xual abuse worse, it is fundamentally changing the scale of the problem. It enables easier production of harmful content, potentially making the problem far larger and leaving long-term consequences that will affect children for years.

She also highlighted that while India does not have specific laws for AI-generated CSAM, the existing laws like the IT Act and POCSO Act can still be applied. Even AI-generated content depicting child obscenity can be prosecuted under these laws, allowing legal action without the need for AI-specific legislation.

However, the reality of discrimination is much worse for the people from the most marginalised and ignored communities, survivors of abuse, trafficking, violence and for persons with disabilities, among many others.

At Space 2 Grow, we recognise that children need to be protected, skills promoted among the marginalised and dignity provided to those who have survived abuse and discrimination.

And that is why we exist.

So today, we stand in solidarity to celebrate this day and reiterate our commitment to work with , , and to build a world that is safe, skilled and free.

As expertly put by Shailey Hingorani, Independent Advisor Violence Against Women and Children, at our AI Webinar, she stated that AI is evolving faster than ever, and the need for making AI safety “one of the most urgent issues of our time”.

She also emphasised a core challenge: there’s no global playbook for AI safety, no single approach everyone agrees on. This, she warned, creates gaps that bad actors will be able to exploit quite easily.

As expertly put by Emma Persson, Innovation and Technology Research Fellow, UNICRI Centre for AI and Robotics, at our AI Webinar, she emphasised that the rise of AI (especially generative AI) has escalated both the scale and severity of crimes against children in the online world, making it one of the fastest-growing global threats.

Speaking on behalf of UNICRI and drawing on their capacity-building ‘AI for Safer Children initiative’ (in partnership with the Ministry of Interior of the United Arab Emirates) and research paper ‘Generative AI: A New Threat for Online Child Sexual Exploitation and Abuse’ in collaboration with the Brackett Foundation and Value for Good, she explained that beyond generating harmful images, AI is also being used to generate text through chatbots and guides that enable and reinforce harmful behaviour.

We want to thank all the speakers who shared their incredible expertise and know-how during the webinar on exploring AI-driven digital risks among children jointly hosted by Space 2 Grow with on the occasion of Safer Internet Day, 2025.

Globally the types of AI driven harms - especially with inappropriate images of classmates being shared by peers is evident across different countries. It isn’t country specific/or just a one off phenomena, this is real. The need for a global framework to combat AI driven harms to children, is a necessity, considering the challenges countries will face, by being inward focused. This webinar was an attempt to create that space - conversations from experts across different countries and leading organisations.

Some of the key takeaways with you as shared by the panelists are here for you!

- Stakeholders need to actively counter the desensitisation that can be caused by the constant onslaught of violent and harmful content generated by AI and prevent it from becoming the new normal

- Collaboration is key to tackling the harms caused by AI and to provide support to victims

- Legislations in countries need to catch up, and the EU Act on AI was shared as the first act to combat harms driven by AI

- The role played by I4C in India on combating cybercrime and its collaborative work, with an emphasis on taking down CSAM immediately, to prevent re victimisation

- Investigations of AI-driven harms must continue and not be deprioritised

- Literacy and education on AI and its harms needs to cut across stakeholders

With the Union Budget 2025 around the corner, anticipation about continued focus on skill development, job creation and poverty alleviation runs high.

Although these areas are key to the nation’s growth, we at Space 2 Grow hope that the budget planners focus on innovative solutions to the unique opportunities and challenges the nation faces.

Challenges include skill development programs that are not inclusive of several marginalised communities and a lack of programs designed to ensure higher retention of target groups- causing less employability and lower placement rates. Along with a focus on inclusion, impact assessments of programs to examine what’s worked and what hasn’t, is essential.

We hope that Budget 2025 emphasises upskilling and growth in an evidence-based manner so that India can truly take significant strides towards its ‘Viksit Bharat’ dream.
