This is an old but all-time favourite photo of mine. I took it five years ago on a safari in Nagarahole National Park, Karnataka. What made it special wasn't the shot itself. I feel I could have done much better on that front. Rather, it was the memory attached to it. I'd seen big cats in the wild on multiple occasions, but never a tiger, and my quest to see one spanned many years and several unlucky trips to wildlife reserves across South India.
Like many people hastily plan trips to Goa, I happened to plan a safari. It worked out, and we managed to get a few seats for the evening slot. As we were about to enter one of the zones, we spotted movement in the weeds. It was a tiger! As it moved through the vegetation, unbothered by our presence, everyone rushed to get a picture or a better view. But that thought completely skipped my mind. I just sat there for a good minute, taking in the sight with my own eyes, before realizing I should probably capture it on my camera too.
As the tiger disappeared into the shrubs, we carried on with the safari. We had no idea we were being watched. A few meters from our van, another tiger was stalking us from behind a row of trees. This one entertained us briefly before melting away into the foliage.
Further along, we came across a watering hole and stopped to watch some birds, when we heard a loud growl. Then came the tigress featured in this photo. We watched her walk past us in all her glory, the setting sun bringing her coat to life. She marked her territory before heading down to the water for a drink. As she took a sip, we heard the call of another tiger. I managed to capture this exact moment, as she looked up. The fourth tiger soon joined her, and we watched the two of them frolic in the water before disappearing into the jungle.
I paid for a chance of hopefully seeing ONE, and ended up getting way more than I bargained for. Not that I'm complaining :)
