Can Bharat Checkmate the Wild Chessboiard Multi-Polar-Crises Conflicts
The saying, "One country's freedom fighters are another's terrorists," reflects a view shared by many, highlighting the need for serious and objective discourse on this complex subject. Historically, the world has been marked by tumultuous events, often dismissed as mere "aberrations in periods of tranquillity," but their impact is far from trivial.
India must remain vigilant amid escalating tensions in the Ukraine-Russia conflict, the ongoing Israel-Gaza strife, the uprising in Dhaka, race riots in the United Kingdom, and a new phase of the Ukraine war that has now spread into Russia. The continued bloodshed in Gaza and the looming threat of an Iran-Israel war foreshadow a grim future, with unrest, disruption, and violence dominating headlines worldwide.
India must be thoroughly prepared to navigate the fractious political landscape surrounding it and be ready to respond to any eventuality. Unity at home is crucial for confronting these existential crises. In essence, as citizens of the world, we must consider how to react to the widespread unrest in both the West and East. The increasingly serious and divisive political debates demand our attention and preparedness.
Closer home, just a few months after its last general election, violence engulfed the streets of Dhaka. Attacks against minority Hindus were reported from across the country. This could have unpredictable consequences. Bharat could not just stand by and watch in 1970-71, but it is hard to surmise what course of action it can take today. Pakistan has ramped up cross-border terror strikes in the Jammu region of Jammu and Kashmir.
A bigger war might break out any time in Israel’s North (with ongoing Skirmishes) between Israelis and Lebanon’s Hezbollah Militia, which is a proxy of Iran in the region. A direct conflict between Israel and Iran, too, can’t be taken off the board just yet. The US has moved two aircraft carrier strike forces, both nuclear-capable, to the East Mediterranean and Persian Gulf. Reinforcements have been pouring into the region. Again, much like other hotspots, while there are many on both sides baying for blood, there are fewer and fewer voices for calm and sanity.
Sadly, none of the hotspots of the world seem to have cooled down as the fires that have been burning underneath the surface are now breaking through with ferocity On top of these, the climate crisis continues to play havoc all over the world. Severe flash flooding has been seen in many European locations including that occurred this year in Kerala seem to be becoming common occurrences. Wildfires are no longer forest fires but uncontrollable firestorms and have ripped through communities in Canada, Greece, California and Uttarakhand, Top of it, a Global public health emergency, M-pox, has all of us hurrying to prevent it from graduating into a pandemic.
While these crises are sprinkled across the world, they pose very pertinent threats to India. Continuing Energy Supply-Chain Disruptions would again cause oil prices to skyrocket. That would have disastrous consequences for the Indian economy. Closing of Marine and Air routes in West Asia, which are already at choking points because of wars, will impact exports and travel. While India has made great and essential strides toward self-reliance, in this very interconnected world but we all rely on each other – Inter-Continents, Continents, Nations, Neighbours and thereof the Philosophy of Vasudeva Kutumbakam.
•So we need to conclude that if we wish for peace, we must prepare for war. Preparation for dealing with existential crises requires that there is unity at home.
•Back in home, Bharat can ill afford to continue fractious politics over every issue and all the time. Wishing for these crises to go away would be preposterously naive.
•What is needed is sharp preparedness to predict and prepare for consequences on this Wild Chessboard.
•And, how did we in the past get over these crises to move forward and give most of us a meaningful and enjoyable life, It is introspection of this kind that gives us a measure of optimism that we will somehow tide over the current crises resulting from senseless killings in various regions of the world! • World is ridden besides, Crises of Terror and Wars with Crises of Refugees, Food Insecurity, Climate Changes, Gender Discrimination, Child marriage, Child Labour and Child Trafficking.
• Amidst, escalating Global tensions and an ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, Modi’s visit signalled India’s evolving role on the world stage, as various international media outlets highlighted.
• Contextually, Indian and World leader PM Modi has had an opportunity to visit in recent past Russia and now Ukraine, there are hopes that the long drawn war between Russia and Ukraine might at least show signs of ‘Detente’, albeit, visit of PM Modi might be concluded both by Russia and West especially US from difficult perspectives and it is to be seen how Bharat will strike in this Region ‘An Entante Cordiale’.
