We have rich and diverse culture but the partiality and bias towards women is still a shame on our society. According to a report, every year, 5 lac baby girls are killed in India even before they step into this world. “Save Girl Child” initiative has been taken by many social organizations in order to change the mindset of our society and think positively towards the girl child.

Of course, teenage girls need role models – but not like beauty vlogger Zoella

Her eyes are enormous. She looks like a startled bird; albeit a bird with the gorgeous, flowing locks of Rapunzel, the high-pitched giggle of Tinkerbell, and a name so irritatingly Disney-fied it makes my stomach churn: Zoella.
Zoella is a beauty and fashion vlogger – the latest creation spat out by the YouTube machine to instruct young girls how to paint on the perfect smoky eye or red lip.
As her subscriber count sky-rocketed, Zoella – real name Zoe Sugg – began to offer more than beauty advice to her young admirers. She has vlogged about her anxiety and recently joined mental-health charity Mind as a digital ambassador. She now has a Penguin book deal, a bespoke beauty range, and two Teen Choice awards to her name, but continues to upload videos to her YouTube channel in which she squeals with excitement over new brands of mascara. She is the epitome of a 21st-century social media megastar – an inspiration to tween girls, and not just because she’s trodden an easy-peasy path to fame and fortune.
Unfortunately, Zoe’s (sorry, Zoella sticks in my throat and on my keyboard) particular brand of sickly sweet girl power brings me out in hives.
At the 2014 Teen Choice awards, where she was named the Choice Web Star: Fashion/Beauty, she told a reporter that if she could give her teenage followers one piece of advice, it would be to fret less about their appearance. “When you’re younger you worry about so many things that you don’t need to worry about like image, appearance,” she coos to the camera, without an ounce of irony in her singsong voice, as though unaware that she’s forged an entire career by prattling on to young girls about how to look good.
To illustrate my point, here are the titles of some of Zoe’s beauty videos: My Spring/Summer Hair and Make Up; HUGE Beauty and Cosmetics Haul; Fresh Spring Make Up Tutorial; My Everyday Make Up Routine. I could go on. She certainly does. On and on she rabbits about how to perfect “festival hair”, “messy top knots”, and even “Back to School beauty” – which really says something about the age of her followers.

Cops teach girls to fight for safety

They can overpower their assailant with their fists, a dupatta or even a pen once they complete this fortnight-long training, promises their trainer. At a Delhi Police camp in Dwarka, a class of 150 women comprising housewives as well as school-goers received their first lessons in self-defence after the programme was inaugurated by special commissioner of police, law and order, Deepak Mishra, on Thursday.

Physical fitness was the only criterion for enrolment in this camp. A medical test was conducted before enrolment. The classes are being conducted by a special team of 35 women police constables. Each class will be of two hours duration after which the women will be tested for their skills. Participants will receive a certificate after completion of the 15-day programme. During the programme, the trainers, too, will learn advanced combat techniques.

"We will teach the trainees unarmed combat. The training is specially aimed at combat within closed spaces and crowded areas. They will learn how to target vulnerable parts of the attacker's body if they are assailed from behind or in close range. The aim is to incapacitate the attacker for a few minutes so that they get time to call for help or run away," Varsha Sharma, DCP, Special Police Unit for Women and Children, supervising the programme, said. Till date, SPUWAC has conducted 990 self-defence programmes and trained a total of 1,20,243 participants including school and college students and housewives. In 2014, 143 programmes were conducted and 15,643 participants trained including students of 54 schools and 11 colleges. Over 1,000 women personnel have also been trained in unarmed combat this year.
