D-Wave plays quantum computing role for Google, USRA, NASA

A unifying goal among the three is to study how quantum computing can advance artificial intelligence and machine learning. Quantum computing is also praised for use when coping with difficult optimization problems.

Cade Metz of Wired described the central points of this announcement. "Together with NASA and the Universities Space Research Association, or USRA, Google operates its quantum machine at the NASA Ames Research center not far from its Mountain View, California, headquarters. Today, D-Wave Systems, the Canadian company that built the machine, said it has agreed to provide regular upgrades to the system—keeping it 'state-of-the-art'—for the next seven years."

In 2010 the company released its first commercial system, D-Wave One. They doubled the number of qubits each year; in 2013 they shipped a 512-qubit D-Wave Two system. This year they announced general availability of the 1000+ qubit D-Wave 2X system.

D-Wave Systems considers this the most advanced quantum computer in the world.

"The Fridge" is a closed cycle dilution refrigerator. The superconducting processor generates no heat, said the company.

Cade Metz in Wired said "D-Wave says that most of the power needed to run the system is related to the extreme cooling. The entire system consumes about 15 kilowatts of power, while the quantum chip itself uses a fraction of a microwatt. 'Most of the power," Williams [Colin Williams, director of business development and strategic partnerships] says, 'is being used to run the refrigerator.' This means that the company can continue to improve its performance without significantly expanding the power it has to use."

The company described processing with D-Wave: "A lattice of 1000 tiny superconducting circuits, known as qubits, is chilled close to absolute zero to get quantum effects. A user models a problem into a search for the 'lowest point in a vast landscape.' The processor considers all possibilities simultaneously to determine the lowest energy required to form those relationships. Multiple solutions are returned to the user, scaled to show optimal answers."

"Since 2013, when the previous generation 500+ qubit D-Wave Two system was installed at NASA Ames," said the D-Wave Systems news release, "scientists at Google, NASA and USRA have been using it to explore the potential for quantum computing and its applicability to a broad range of complex problems such as web search, speech recognition, planning and scheduling, air-traffic management, robotic missions to other planets and support operations in mission control centers."

This is a multi-year agreement. David Bell, Director of USRA's Research Institute for Advanced Computer Science, said USRA was looking forward to the diversity of research to result by having universities and other research organizations from around the world conduct research using each generation of D-Wave systems.

As far as D-Wave Systems is concerned, the quantum computing era has begun. The company said that there are many complex computing problems that can't be addressed by conventional systems. Quantum computing can step in, with its potential to help solve some of the most complex technical, commercial, scientific, and national defense problems .

What in particular interests Google in this area? Google just like NASA and the USRA looks to quantum computing to help make advances in artificial intelligence, as AI can benefit from the way quantum computers work, said Fortune. "Google," said Derrick Harris, a senior writer at Fortune," is working on improving its search engine, speech recognition, and other capabilities through this research."

These are Data's Dark Ages, and That Needs to Change (Op-Ed)

Satyen Sangani is an economist and CEO of Alation, which helps businesses better find, understand and use internal data. Sangani spent nearly a decade at Oracle following positions with the Texas Pacific Group and Morgan Stanley & Co. This Op-Ed is part of a series provided by the World Economic Forum Technology Pioneers, class of 2015. Sangani contributed this article to Live Science's Expert Voices: Op-Ed & Insights.

For those of us who champion the power of data, the past five years have been an incredible ride thanks to the rise of big data. Consider just these three examples: By 2020, humanity will have created as many digital bits as there are stars in the universe; data drove U.S. President Barack Obama's wins in the 2008 and 2012 elections; and data are powering the incredible rise of new companies like Uber and Airbnb, allowing people to monetize their most illiquid, fixed assets like cars and houses.

Of course, data haven't accomplished any of this. Data aren't the protagonists in any of the stories above. Humans are. People use data. Data can show correlations and trends, but people have insights that suggest cause and effect. Insights are what enable better decisions and drive innovation. Here's the catch: In spite of our recent data-driven achievements, the evidence suggests that humans may well be in the dark ages of data.

YouTube getting into game of streaming play

YouTube on Friday said it is creating an online arena devoted to video game play, jumping onto a hot "e-sports" trend and challenging Amazon-owned Twitch.

YouTube Gaming will debut in Britain and the United States in the coming months, according to product manager Alan Joyce.
"YouTube Gaming is built to be all about your favorite games and gamers, with more videos than anywhere else," Joyce said in a blog post.
"From 'Asteroids' to 'Zelda,' more than 25,000 games will each have their own page, a single place for all the best videos and live streams about that title."
YouTube Gaming will also have channels devoted to specific game publishers or personalities.
A preview of the new YouTube offering, including game content creators such as 'iHasCupquake' and 'NadeShot,' will be showcased at a major Electronic Entertainment Expo extravaganza next week in Los Angeles.
"Live streams bring the gaming community closer together, so they've put them front-and-center on the YouTube Gaming homepage," Joyce said.
"In the coming weeks, YouTube will launch an improved live experience that makes it simpler to broadcast your game play to YouTube."

Microsoft makes Word available on Android phones

The apps, which hit shelves of Google's online Play Store, build on a Microsoft strategy to make its applications accessible from a broad array of devices as services in the Internet cloud.
The US software titan has applications tailored for use on Android-powered tablets as well as on Apple iPhones or iPads.
"I'm pleased to announce the general availability of the new Word, Excel and PowerPoint apps for Android phone," Microsoft Office team corporate vice president Kirk Koenigsbauer said in a blog post.
"These join our previously released Office apps for Android tablets to complete the Office experience for the millions of Android users around the world."
Feedback harvested during a preview period prompted features such as making it simple to connect with digital file storage services Box and Google Drive, along with Microsoft's own OneDrive, according to Koenigsbauer.

Nintendo to allow gay marriage in latest 'Fire Emblem' game

The sword and spear-wielding warriors in the new instalment of Nintendo's hit "Fire Emblem" series will be able to marry whomever they like, the Japanese game-maker has said.
The move comes after the board game-turned-console behemoth was forced to apologise for excluding same-sex relationships in an earlier game.
"Fire Emblem Fates", which hit the Japanese market on Thursday, will roll out in the United States and Europe next year.
In a statement released this week, Kyoto-based Nintendo said the game, in which players advance through a fantasy world doing battle with other characters, will be inclusive.
"We can confirm that Fire Emblem Fates for Nintendo 3DS... includes the possibility for a same-sex marriage to take place between the main character created by the gamer and another character," it said.
"We believe that our gameplay experiences should reflect the diversity of the communities in which we operate."
The development came after Nintendo America was forced to apologise last year when users complained that a life-simulation game, "Tomodachi Life", did not allow same-sex marriage.
"We apologize for disappointing many people by failing to include same-sex relationships in Tomodachi Life," a statement released in May last year said.
"We will strive to design a game-play experience from the ground up that is more inclusive, and better represents all players," it said.
While calls are also growing for Japan to legalise same-sex marriage, there is no specific legal protection for gay people and the issue is not widely debated among the public.
Tokyo's Shibuya district council voted earlier this year to issue "partnership" certificates to gay couples, the first such recognition of same-sex unions in Japan.
