| From conversations to capacity building on the ground |

Last week, SDS took the Unnatfarm Initiative deeper into the field through a series of expert-led engagements across Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. A multidisciplinary team from SDS worked closely with FPOs and FFPOs to translate concepts into context-specific understanding, focusing on how farmer institutions can strengthen operations, governance, and long-term sustainability.

In Assam, SDS experts engaged with CLFs and VOs in Behali and Pub Chaiduar blocks, with critical on-ground coordination support from BMMUs. These sessions created space for dialogue around institutional roles, convergence opportunities, and how FPOs can better align with ongoing initiatives at the block and cluster level.

In Arunachal Pradesh, the engagement moved from discussion rooms to farms. Field immersion at piggery units and kiwi gardens in Ziro allowed SDS experts and FPO leadership to jointly assess existing practices, market linkages, and enterprise potential rooted in local agro-climatic conditions.

This on-ground learning was complemented by a structured Board of Directors training in Ziro, where SDS facilitated in-depth discussions on the CSS 10,000 FPO Scheme, statutory responsibilities, and core FPO operations, enabling board members to take more informed and confident decisions.
Through expert knowledge, hands-on field learning, and institutional capacity building, SDS continues to support farmer institutions not just as implementing units, but as evolving, farmer-owned enterprises capable of scaling with clarity and confidence.

Reflections from the field --

Over the past few days, our research team has been on the ground across rural Assam, traveling through Kamrup, Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, and nearby regions to understand how communities are rebuilding education systems in the post-COVID-19 context. While each area reflects a different pace of recovery, the shared priority is clear: helping children return to learning with confidence after prolonged disruption.

Working in education after COVID-19 reinforces that recovery is not just about reopening schools. It is about addressing learning gaps, re-establishing routines, supporting teachers, and rebuilding trust among families. Our days in the field began early and ended late, marked by long road journeys, school visits, and meaningful conversations with teachers, parents, and students navigating this transition.
Fieldwork is demanding, but it is also grounding. Seeing students re-engage with learning, teachers adapt their approaches, and parents continue to prioritise education despite economic challenges offers both perspective and motivation.

Local field teams and community educators were essential partners throughout this engagement. Their insights helped bridge context, language, and data, ensuring that our understanding remained rooted in lived experience.
Each visit reaffirmed a simple truth: post-COVID education recovery cannot be shaped from a distance. Data and frameworks matter, but they only become meaningful when informed by what classrooms and communities are experiencing today. Being present on the ground keeps the work responsive, honest, and focused on what truly matters.

| From grassroots support to regional recognition |

What began as a vision to strengthen farmer-led institutions has today turned into a moment of regional pride.

Joram FPO Cooperative Society Limited and Aaji Balu FPO Cooperative Society Limited from Ziro, Lower Subansiri District, Arunachal Pradesh, have been honoured with the NCDC Regional Award for Cooperative Excellence 2025.
This recognition reflects the dedication of farmer members, the leadership of the cooperatives, and the impact of sustained institutional support. With continuous handholding, capacity building, and strategic guidance from SDS, these FPOs have grown into resilient cooperatives that uphold transparency, collective ownership, and economic empowerment.
At SDS, our work goes beyond supporting livelihoods. We focus on building strong systems, nurturing leadership at the grassroots, and enabling cooperatives to stand confidently on their own. This award is not just a milestone for Joram and Aaji Balu FPOs, but a reaffirmation of what is possible when communities are supported with trust, patience, and long-term vision.
A proud moment for Arunachal Pradesh, for farmer collectives, and for SDS as we continue to walk alongside cooperatives on their journey towards excellence and sustainability.

| SDS Driving change through strong linkage and field-level support | 🌱

Strengthening women-led farming through knowledge and partnerships, SDS played a key role in connecting Ujjwal Women Producer Cooperative Society Limited with KVK, Udalguri under the Scientific Cultivation Practices of Toria component of the CFLD Rabi Oilseed Programme. Through this facilitation, the FPO received focused technical training on TS-38 rapeseed cultivation.
The impact is visible on the ground, as KVK, Udalguri visited the demonstration plot where TS-38 rapeseed is being cultivated across 30 bighas of land.
This initiative reflects SDS’s continued efforts to translate scientific guidance into improved agricultural practices and stronger livelihoods for women farmers.

“She turned challenges into stepping stones and dreams into direction.”
Jayanti Ramchiary’s story is one of resilience and quiet determination. After completing her graduation, she began working with Sarba Shiksha Abhiyan, striving to support her family while facing financial hardships. Life wasn’t easy, but she carried an unshaken belief that education could change her path.
Balancing work and personal struggles, she went on to complete her master’s degree, proving that persistence always pays off. When she first applied for a position at SESTA Development Services (SDS) and didn’t get selected, she didn’t let disappointment stop her instead, it became her motivation to keep growing.
Soon after, she was selected as the CEO of Swrang Women Producers Coorporative Society Limited , an all-women Farmer Producer Company. With her leadership and vision, the FPC began to thrive, achieving a turnover of ₹9–10 lakhs and bringing together 362 women farmers engaged in mustard seeds, rice, buckwheat, maize, potato, and dragon fruit.
“It’s not just a company anymore , it’s a movement of women who believe in themselves.”
Today, Jayanti manages the operations, finances, and development plans of the FPC with confidence and clarity. She leads with empathy, guiding women farmers toward self-reliance and financial independence. Her office is not just a workplace it’s a space where women find strength, purpose, and solidarity.
“When I see women speak up, make decisions, and earn with pride, I feel I’ve succeeded,” she says.
Jayanti’s journey reminds us that true success begins with self-belief. From struggling to make ends meet to leading a flourishing all-women enterprise, she has become the voice of empowerment showing that when women rise, communities rise with them.

When farmers rise, an economy roots deeper and grows stronger 🧑‍🌾 🌾 .
This week, SDS attended the FPO Samagam in New Delhi : a powerful space bringing together farmer collectives, market leaders, and institutions working to shape the future of India’s agri-ecosystem.
With over 50 FPOs showcasing their products, the event became a celebration of grassroots entrepreneurship. From local produce to value-added innovations, each stall reflected resilience, identity, and ambition from rural India.

✅ Key takeaways from the Samagam:

• FPOs received a national platform to showcase their products
• New market linkages and buyer networks were established
• Exposure to emerging strategies for collective growth and value chain strengthening
• Meaningful conversations on scaling farmer-owned enterprises

Our team also had the privilege to meet Mr. Natbar Pal, Director at SFAC, and discuss the evolving landscape of FPO development and sustainable agri-market strategies.

Each interaction reaffirmed our belief ,the future of agriculture will be built by empowered farmers, strong collectives, and collaborative ecosystems.
SDS remains committed to strengthening FPOs, building market pathways, and ensuring rural entrepreneurs step confidently into national markets.
