British explorers and administrative officers J.P. Mills and J.H. Hutton first explored and documented six stone jar sites in Dima Hasao in 1929, thereby bringing them to the notice of the wider world. The sites recorded by them were Bolasan, Hojai Dhobongling, Khartongship, Khobak, Malangpa, and Ndunglo.

In the Independence period, these sites were brought under the protection of the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, 1958, and placed under the care of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).

In recent years, the Department of Archaeology under the administrative control of the Dima Hasao Autonomous Council (DHAC), during its systematic field surveys in the district, has discovered seven additional stone jar sites. These newly identified locations are in
Longkai Hamrim Hading, Madai Raja Hajong, Dimram, P. Zoar, Mangklung Disa, Thaimodoling, and Bakhorma Hading.

MONOLITHIC HUT
📍Maibang

A unique example of art and architecture under the Dimasa rule is the monolithic hut carved out of a rock on the bank of the River Mahur. This hut is locally known as the Ranachandi Madaikho, meaning temple dedicated to Goddess Ranachandi.

The upper part of the rock was shaped like a hut with a rectangular plan and a doo-chala roof. It has a curvilinear eave and four false doors on all four sides. It also provides a narrow space for circumambulation around the temple. The inscription on one of its walls suggests that the temple was erected in dedication to goddess Ranachandi, the tutelary deity of the Dimasas.

Raja Tamradhwajnarayan-II began construction on the temple in circa 1701 CE but was left unfinished. Eventually, Raja Harishchandranarayana completed it in the year 1761 CE. Today, this historic architectural gem is regarded as one of the most spectacular monolithic monuments in the North-Eastern Region and is declared a monument of national importance by the Government of India under the Ancient Monuments, Archaeological Sites, and Remains Act, 1958.

🪨 Stone Workshop Unearthed at Watidisa Dikhong
📍 Wajao, Dima Hasao District, Assam

A recent discovery by the Department of Archaeology, under NCHAC, has brought to light a unique archaeological site along the Watidisa Dikhong stream—a tributary of the Dhansiri River. The site appears to have been an active workshop or ritual production area, where large numbers of carved sandstone objects were shaped, possibly for military and ceremonial use.

Among the artefacts found are

1. Stone balls resembling cannonballs or sling stones, suggesting organised defense or warfare.

2. Carved monoliths, stelae, and gourd-shaped stones hint at ritual or symbolic functions.

3. Objects like rice pounders and a drum-like shape point to everyday and possibly musical or ceremonial life.

Many of the items are unfinished or broken—evidence that the site was used for large-scale crafting. Some of the larger stones match the scale seen in Dimapur’s Rajabari Monoliths, suggesting a possible link with the Dimasa Kachari Kingdom, known for its advanced stone craftsmanship and political strength.

This find offers valuable clues into the region’s cultural and political history and highlights the archaeological wealth of the Dima Hasao district.
