🇺🇸 A major constitutional debate is heating up in Washington.
Rep. Nancy Mace is backing a proposal that would prevent foreign-born Americans from serving in Congress or on the federal judiciary — arguing that positions with constitutional authority should be reserved for citizens born in the United States.
During the discussion, Mace referenced lawmakers including Pramila Jayapal, Shri Thanedar, and Ilhan Omar.
Right now, the U.S. Constitution only requires the president and vice president to be natural-born citizens. Members of Congress and federal judges can legally be naturalized citizens, meaning any change would require a constitutional amendment.
Supporters believe the proposal would strengthen national sovereignty and protect American interests.
Critics argue it could unfairly target immigrant Americans and challenge the principle of equal citizenship under the law.
💬 Should naturalized citizens be allowed to serve in Congress and federal courts — or should those positions be limited to natural-born citizens only?
