To address flooding and crop loss, a combination Nature based Solutions (NbS) of WATER BODY RESTORATION and SUSTAINABLE CULTIVATION ON FLOATING PLANTATION BEDS was set up at Atigaon, Munshiganj (Bangladesh).

🌿 Pond Restoration led to enhanced aeration and wetland recovery by weeding invasive species such as Water Hyacinth (কচুরিপানা), Alligator W**d (মেটে শাক), Stonewort (পাতা শৈবাল), Water Fern (ঢেকি শাক), and Filamentous Algae (নীল-সবুজ শেত্তলা) and desilting to increase capacity.

🏞️ 21 floating plantation beds using bamboos and decomposed Water Hyacinth repurposed from the weeding process were constructed, on which seeds of vegetables and medicinal plants such as bottle gourd (লাউ), ash gourd (চাল কুমড়ো), pumpkin (কুমড়ো), mint (পুদিনা), aloe vera (ঘৃতকুমারী), spinach (পুঁই শাক), cucumber (শসা), and okra (ভেন্ডি) were sown.

The thriving plants have demonstrated:
• 🌊 Improved water quality and enhanced habitat restoration
• 🌱 Safer and healthier vegetables, free from harmful pesticides and chemical fertilizers
• 🥗 Nutritious, sustainable yields for households.

Two nature-based solutions (NbS) were implemented in Khulna Division, at Bangladesh at Botbuniya Bazar and Lokhhikhola, Dacope under the project PRAN, to stabilise river banks suffering from erosion due to mangrove depletion. These areas used to be rich in mangroves before 2013. Since then however, the mangroves had been steadily depleted, the banks face eroded and the nearby households are at constant risk of flooding. The NbS interventions have reintroduced native saplings of Avicennia marina (Goran), Excoecaria agallocha (Geowa), Heritiera fomes (Sundari), Nypa fruticans (Golpata) and Bruguiera gymnorrhiza (Kakra).

At Botbuniya Bazar, 800 mangrove saplings have been planted and additionally protected across 20,000 sq ft with three 35-foot brushwood-filled bamboo permeable dams. These dams slow water inflows, promote sedimentation, and protect the saplings until they are able to mature and stabilise the soil.

At Lokhhikhola, a 100-foot artificial mangrove shelter has been set up with five rows of 15-foot bamboo poles to help establish 250 mangrove saplings that have been planted. Artificial mangrove shelters mimic the root systems of mature mangroves. The vertical bamboo poles break the impact of intertidal waves, reducing water velocity and promoting sedimentation. This creates a stable environment for saplings to take root and grow. A shade net fence has been put up to protect the seedlings from herbivores as well.

These NbS will mitigate erosion, enhance sedimentation and aid mangrove regeneration to ensure long-term riverbank stability and safety from floods for the coastal communities on Bangladesh.
