Nītividhāna | Conversations in Policy

India’s traditions hold more than philosophical ideas. They hold ways of understanding human nature, society, order, and the art of governance.

In the valedictory lecture of the Nītividhāna Advanced Certificate: Governance and Statecraft, Dr. Nagaraj Paturi ji explored how these knowledge traditions can inform contemporary thinking on public policy and statecraft.

The session looked beyond classical texts to include folk epics, proverbs, oral traditions, and lived community knowledge as important sources for understanding governance, leadership, and society. The Pañcatantra, for instance, was discussed not simply as a collection of stories, but as a practical body of knowledge on the ways of the world and statecraft.

The discussion then turned to Nīti, Dharma, and Mokṣa. Nīti was examined as guidance for action and policy ex*****on, while Dharma was understood as that which sustains order and harmony. Mokṣa was brought into a practical policy context as liberty and freedom, including freedom from one's own internal compulsions.

The session also offered a different understanding of the relationship between society and the state. Rather than viewing citizens primarily as subjects requiring constant regulation, the Indic perspective recognises an inherent human inclination towards order and harmony. The role of governance, therefore, can also be to enable and sustain that order.

The idea of Śruti and Smṛti provided another important lens. While enduring principles provide continuity, their application must respond to changing contexts of deśa and kāla. Policy, in this sense, can remain rooted without becoming static.

The conversation ultimately brought statecraft closer to lived reality. Understanding communities, engaging with local knowledge, observing how people organise themselves, and recognising the wisdom embedded in everyday social practices are essential to developing policies that are responsive rather than merely prescriptive.

What does India’s strategic position look like in a world where the balance of power is shifting?

As part of the Nītividhāna Advanced Certificate: Governance and Statecraft, Sanjay Pulipaka Ji led a session on Global Transitions: India’s Strategic Edge, taking participants through the changing dynamics of global power and the strategic choices they create for India.

The session examined how economic power, technology, security, geography, and critical resources are increasingly intertwined, making it essential to look at global transitions as interconnected shifts rather than isolated developments.

A major focus was the structural shift of global power towards the East. With economic weight increasingly concentrated across the Indo-Pacific, the discussion moved beyond a China-centric reading of Asia to consider the growing roles of India, Japan, South Korea, and ASEAN in shaping the emerging order.

The discussion extended to modern warfare, critical technologies, global institutions, trade, migration, and transboundary resources, bringing attention to the increasingly interconnected nature of strategic decision-making. India's pharmaceutical capabilities, digital infrastructure, maritime position, manufacturing ambitions, and ability to provide global public goods were examined as sources of strategic leverage.

The session also brought a civilizational perspective to India's engagement with the world. Understanding India's strategic choices requires looking beyond conventional state-to-state relations to the country's historical relationships, civilizational continuity, geography, and evolving conception of its role in the global order.

At Nītividhāna, governance and statecraft are studied in the context of the forces that shape the choices available to a nation. By bringing geopolitical analysis into conversation with India's civilizational context, the programme equips participants to engage with global transitions not merely as observers, but as policy thinkers capable of understanding India's strategic possibilities within a changing world.

What should a young Hindu know about Sanātana Dharma?

Published in 1916 by the Board of Trustees of the Central Hindu College, Benares, Sanātana Dharma: An Elementary Textbook of Hindu Religion and Ethics was compiled by Annie Besant and Bhagavan Das and designed as a systematic introductory text for young students.

Its purpose was distinctive: to present Hindu thought in a broad and non-sectarian manner while remaining firmly rooted in its foundational ideas.

The book moves through three interconnected areas:
• Fundamental ideas such as karma, rebirth, sacrifice and the unity underlying existence
• Practices and institutions such as saṃskāras, śrāddha, worship and the four āśramas
• Ethics, including duty, self-discipline, compassion, virtue and conduct towards others
Sanskrit verses and narratives accompany the lessons throughout.

More than a century later, the book offers a valuable example of an educational approach in which philosophy, practice and ethical formation were not treated as separate subjects.

Anand Krishnaswamy engaged the 38th Commandant to Senior Commandant Pre-Promotion Course on “Conflict Management & Negotiation Skills.”

These engagements reflect Bṛhat’s larger effort to bring Indian Knowledge Systems into contemporary questions of leadership, judgement, negotiation and institutional responsibility.
