Walking back into SVIT, this time as a judge.

I did my BTech here, so being invited back to judge the SVIT Smart India Hackathon 2026 meant a lot to me.

52 teams, from first-year students to final-year students, spent the day building and defending their ideas. There were robot cars running on the floor, working prototypes on laptops, and plenty of students who had clearly been up all night making things work.

What stood out to me:

🔹 First-year students competing with seniors and holding their own
🔹 Teams that could explain why they built something, not just what they built
🔹 How willing they were to take hard questions and think on their feet

Choosing the best project wasn’t easy. Congratulations to the winning teams, and to every team that showed up and built something real. That’s how you start.

Thank you to the SVIT management, faculty and organising team for having me back, and for the felicitation.

To the students: keep building. And if any of you are curious about cybersecurity, my door is always open.

“You explained the payload well. You just couldn’t apply it.”
That single line decided this mock interview.
We give every candidate live lab access instead of theory questions. Five levels of XSS. He cleared one. The average across candidates is three.
Same interview, three things that showed up:
→ A college task listed as a “project” on the resume — instant red flag.
→ Strong on SOC log reading and phishing header analysis.
→ Strong on explaining. Weak on executing.
And the scoring reality nobody tells students: skills 7 with communication 9 gets hired. Skills 9 with communication 6 does not.
If you’re hiring or training cybersecurity freshers, test the hands, not the vocabulary.

Four years of networking classes. Zero hours in a server room.
This is the gap. Not knowledge — exposure. You can name every topology and still not know why a server has two power cables, or what you’d actually do at 2 AM when a box in the office stops responding and you’re at home.
Real rack. Real switch. Real firewall. Real answers.
Tag someone still revising topology diagrams for their exam.

We don’t ask candidates to recite payloads. We watch them improvise.

This is a real mock interview from ER Segment. No theory round to hide
behind — we hand over live lab access and five levels of cross-site
scripting, from a basic reflected XSS all the way to a WAF bypass.

Level 3 is where most people stall. The script tag is dead, the filter
is doing its job, and the only way through is to actually understand
what you’re typing instead of pasting the one payload you memorised.

Result this time: 3 out of 5. Honest feedback on the rest.

And the part nobody wants to hear — if AI isn’t in your skill set yet,
you’re already being filtered out. The market moved. Your resume didn’t.
