Driving innovation in India’s rapidly growing SpaceTech ecosystem, Abyom SpaceTech and Defence Pvt. Ltd. is building cutting-edge solutions that are making space transportation more accessible, affordable, and sustainable.

Incubated at PIEDS : Pilani Innovation & Entrepreneurship Development Society, BITS Pilani , and supported under the TIDE 2.0 programme by MeitY Startup Hub with funding support of ₹35 lakhs, the startup is developing next-generation reusable rockets, advanced space infrastructure, and dual-use technologies.

Founded by Jainul Abedin, Abyom has achieved several notable milestones, including:
• Successfully completing over 250 propulsion system tests
• Deploying India’s first commercial mobile rocket engine testing facility

A few years ago, building reusable rocket & dual-use technologies in India felt like a distant ambition.

Today, we're seeing a new generation of engineers, researchers, institutions, investors, and policymakers collectively shaping a vibrant space ecosystem.

It was great to share Abyom SpaceTech & Defence's recent milestones, learnings, and vision with The New Indian Express, including our work on reusable propulsion systems, indigenous testing infrastructure, and the journey toward building next-generation space and defence technologies.

Every propulsion program reaches a stage where testing stops being about “Can it fire?” and starts becoming about “Does it behave exactly as predicted?”

The Final Integrated Qualification Firing of our BSE-II engine was one of those moments.

This terminal hot fire campaign delivered performance exactly aligned with our analytical predictions, simulation models, and expected operating behaviour developed throughout the program.

But BSE-II was never just about a single engine.

It was about building the capability to design, test, iterate, and validate reusable propulsion systems completely in-house as a team.

Over the course of this campaign, we strengthened not only the engine itself, but also the engineering processes, end-to-end infrastructure, control systems, testing workflows, and propulsion validation capabilities required for reusable launch systems.

With the successful completion of the BSE-II campaign, our focus now advances toward the next phase of the AbyoKalaM Cryogenic series and our Reusable Rocket prototype development program, alongside dual-use technologies for civil and defence applications.

Reusable launch vehicle closer as Hyderabad startup completes engine test.

The tests also proved important features needed for reusable rockets, such as controlled thrust, reliable ignition and smooth system integration.

City-based Abyom SpaceTech & Defence has taken a major step towards building reusable rockets by successfully testing its BSE-II liquid rocket engine.

The engine, developed entirely in-house at the BITS Pilani Hyderabad Campus, is a small but powerful 2.5 kN engine. It builds on an earlier version, BSE-I, which introduced a new fuel injection method in India. Together, both engines have undergone over 250 hot fire tests to check performance and reliability.

In the latest test, the engine ran for six seconds under controlled conditions, reaching very high temperatures of over 2,200°C. It maintained stable performance throughout, and the exhaust plume behaved as expected, showing that the design is working properly.

A key achievement is that the entire system — including the engine, test setup and control systems — was designed and built by the company itself. The tests also proved important features needed for reusable rockets, such as controlled thrust, reliable ignition and smooth system integration.

Going forward, the company plans to build a more powerful cryogenic engine, develop a rocket that can take off and land vertically, and expand its testing facilities. It also aims to strengthen its tech portfolio.

Abyom SpaceTech has received recognition in Forbes 30 Under 30 Asia 2025 and India 2026. It has also worked with IIT Bombay and carried out over 150 engine tests.

As we progress towards our Flight Ready Engine (FRE) & HOPE Vehicle development program, we have successfully executed the BSE-II engine hot fire test campaign.

This phase focused on validating key reusability technologies - including injection, throttling, and ignition operating at ~12 bar chamber pressure and temperatures exceeding 2200°C.

Building on our BSE-I campaign, where we demonstrated India’s first Pintle Injection mechanism, BSE-II takes us a step further with stable combustion under blow-down feed conditions, refined impingement mixing architecture, and expected plume behavior, including Mach diamond formation during firing.

The entire testing stack - engine, test bench, control systems, test instrumentation and the DAQ system — has been fully designed and developed in-house by Team Abyom.

This campaign successfully validated combustion stability, chamber pressure targets, and overall integrated system performance.

Each step like this strengthens not just our propulsion systems, but also the ecosystem required to build reliable, reusable launch capabilities - contributing to India’s growing strength in Space and Defence.
