Kamala Harris or Donald Trump: Who’s Got the Edge for Indian Students Ready to Jump?

In my opinion, Kamala Harris would be a better option for Indian students planning to study in the U.S., both in the short and long term. The Biden-Harris administration has shown more support for international students through policies that promote smoother visa processes and offer better opportunities for post-graduation employment. Programs like the Optional Practical Training (OPT) and the H-1B visa, which are essential for Indian students aiming to work in the U.S. after completing their studies, are more likely to be supported and possibly expanded under Harris. In the short term, this would make it easier for Indian students to secure visas and access internships. In the long run, I believe Harris would continue to foster policies that help Indian students stay in the U.S. after graduation, providing them with more stable career opportunities. Additionally, with her Indian heritage, Harris may have a more empathetic understanding of the challenges faced by the Indian student community.

On the other hand, I feel Donald Trump’s approach would pose more challenges for Indian students. His previous presidency saw stricter immigration policies, with more scrutiny on student and work visas. This could lead to greater uncertainty for Indian students, both in terms of securing visas and finding work opportunities post-graduation. In the short term, students may face difficulties in navigating the visa process or finding work opportunities. In the long run, if Trump returns to power, I think it could become harder for Indian students to remain in the U.S. after their studies, as his administration is likely to enforce stricter immigration laws, reducing opportunities for long-term work or residency.

However, one positive aspect of Trump’s potential return to office is the strengthening of political ties between the U.S. and India. Trump has shown a willingness to align closely with India on global issues, which could lead to favorable trade and political agreements between the two countries. While this political relationship may not directly affect student visas or post-graduation opportunities, it could provide India with strategic advantages, possibly influencing certain favorable policies for Indian nationals in the U.S.

Overall, I believe Kamala Harris provides a more stable and supportive environment for Indian students, both in terms of immediate opportunities and long-term prospects for staying and working in the U.S. after their education.

1. Language Proficiency Requirements:
• All applicants must now provide proof of language proficiency. For university graduates (Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Doctoral degrees), a minimum of Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) 7 in English or French is required across all four skills: reading, writing, listening, and speaking.
• For college graduates and other programs, the requirement is CLB 5 in English or French.
• Accepted language tests include IELTS, CELPIP, PTE Core, and French tests like TEF Canada or TCF Canada. The test results must be less than two years old when applying .
2. Field of Study Requirements:

When people are stressed, their brains may not function well, leading to poor decisions. Neuromanagement helps leaders create less stressful work environments, which can lead to clearer thinking and better outcomes.

Neuromanagement is still quite new and hasn’t fully entered the mainstream academic curriculum. However, some top business schools are beginning to offer courses that include neuromanagement as part of leadership and decision-making programs. It’s growing slowly but could become more common as research shows how it can improve management practices.

The rationale behind this policy appears to be ensuring that students are financially stable and will not overly rely on part-time jobs to support themselves.

However, this approach may not serve its intended purpose. Despite meeting these financial requirements, many students still seek part-time work during their studies. Part-time jobs are crucial not just for financial support but also for personal development. They offer students valuable practical experience, help them integrate into the local culture, and boost their confidence. Relying on such work does not indicate financial instability, but rather the pursuit of broader opportunities.

A more practical solution might be to require payment of one year’s tuition in advance. This could serve as a clearer indicator of financial commitment while simplifying the process and reducing the incentive for students to resort to dubious practices like obtaining loans through questionable means or presenting forged financial documents. It would also recognize the importance of part-time work as an integral aspect of the student experience, rather than something to be discouraged.

1. Spousal Open Work Permit (SOWP) Changes: Starting in 2024, only spouses of students enrolled in specific programs like master’s, PhD, or professional degrees (e.g., dentistry, law, medicine, nursing, engineering) are eligible for the SOWP. This limits opportunities for spouses of students in other fields to work in Canada. These changes are significant for Indian students, especially those pursuing bachelor’s degrees outside these professional fields. The rapid advancement of AI and Just-in-Time learning will enable personalized, on-demand education that caters to individual learning needs, rendering large lecture halls redundant. Instead, the focus will likely shift to hands-on practical work and lab-based learning, where students can apply theoretical knowledge in real-world contexts. Universities could drastically reduce their infrastructure, needing only specialized labs for practical training, and collaborating with external labs or virtual simulations for advanced learning experiences.

AI will also enable remote learning for most theoretical aspects, allowing students to grasp concepts at their own pace without the constraints of physical classrooms. This shift could lead to a significant reduction in the need for large university campuses, as learning will be flexible, accessible, and scalable through digital platforms. The future of engineering education may therefore be defined by smaller, tech-integrated campuses focused primarily on innovation and practical skill development, making traditional classrooms obsolete.
