You might not need IELTS 7 to work in Australia. For the 482 visa, 5.0 is enough.

A lot of skilled workers put off their move because they think their English is not good enough. For the Skills in Demand visa (subclass 482), Core Skills and Specialist Skills streams, the bar is lower than most people expect.

Minimum scores for tests taken on or after 13 September 2025:
โœ… IELTS (Academic or General Training): 5.0 in each skill
โœ… PTE Academic: Listening 33, Reading 36, Writing 29, Speaking 24
โœ… TOEFL iBT: Listening 8, Reading 8, Writing 9, Speaking 14
โœ… OET: Listening 220, Reading 240, Writing 200, Speaking 270
CELPIP General, LANGUAGECERT Academic and the Michigan English Test are accepted too.

3 things to check before you book a test:
1๏ธโƒฃ Your test must be taken within 3 years before you apply
2๏ธโƒฃ At-home online tests are not accepted (IELTS Online, TOEFL Home Edition, OET@Home and similar)
3๏ธโƒฃ Sitting TOEFL iBT after 21 January 2026? Select "Taking TOEFL for Australia" when you register

And some people do not need a test at all, for example:
โ€ข passport holders from the UK, USA, Canada, New Zealand or Ireland
โ€ข people who completed at least 5 years of full-time study in English at secondary level or higher

Save this post for later and send it to a friend who is still waiting for a "perfect" score.
Want to know if the 482 visa could work for you? Send us a DM to book a consultation.

๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡บ Big news out of Australia this week!

The government has announced a new round of migration changes, and hereโ€™s what you actually need to know, in plain English.

๐Ÿ“‰ Fewer people overall will be let in this year, but if you work in construction, healthcare, education, or a few other shortage industries, your application could actually move faster.

๐Ÿ”จ Qualified tradesperson? Good news! Your qualification now counts the same as a university degree when Australia scores your visa application.

๐ŸŽ“ Studying in Australia? Youโ€™ll no longer be able to bring your spouse or kids with you on most student visas. And you can only switch to a higher level course, not sideways or backwards.

๐ŸŒ Planning a Working Holiday? Getting a second or third year just got harder. Itโ€™s now a ballot system with limited spots.

๐Ÿค” Confused about how these changes affect you specifically?

Thatโ€™s what weโ€™re here for. ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡บ

๐ŸŽ“ Key Takeaways: Hiring International Graduates and Visa Pathways Webinar by Department of Home Affairs

Current as at 10 September 2026.

Our team recently attended the "Hiring International Graduates and Visa Pathways" webinar, presented by Business, Industry and Regional Outreach officers (BIROS) from the Department of Home Affairs. Here is a summary of the most useful points for our clients, students, graduates and sponsoring employers. ๐Ÿ“‹

What International Students Should Actually Know:
๐Ÿ’ผ You don't have to work in your field, but it pays off if you do. A lot of students think their student visa ties them to jobs in their study area. It doesn't, you can work anywhere. But every hour you spend working in or near your field is an hour that strengthens your case for a skilled visa later, so it is worth chasing even if it is not required.

โฐ Watch your hours if you're studying by coursework. Standard student visa holders can work up to 48 hours a fortnight while classes are in session. If you're doing a Masters by Research or a PhD, that cap disappears entirely, for you and your family.

๐Ÿ“… The 6 month window for your 485 is tighter than it sounds. You need to apply within 6 months of finishing your degree, while still holding your student visa, and your English score needs to be less than 12 months old at the time you apply. Start organising this before your final semester ends, not after.

โœ… If employer sponsorship is the plan, know it usually means full time. Both the 482 and the 494 pathways require full time work, 38 hours a week. If an employer is only offering you part time hours, that is a real gap to flag early, not something to sort out later.

๐Ÿš€ Thinking about your next step after graduation? Get in touch with Siva Visa, we can map out which pathway actually fits your situation!

We're heading to AIEC 2026! ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡บ

Siva Visa will be attending the Australian International Education Conference (AIEC) 2026 in Sydney, 27โ€“30 October, Australia's LARGEST conference for international education.

We're excited to connect with universities, educators and education providers from across the sector, learn about what's shaping the international education landscape, and build partnerships that support students throughout their whole Australian journey, from admission and student visa, through arrival, post-study work rights, employer sponsorship, and on to permanent residency and citizenship.

As a student lifecycle partner, we believe in walking alongside students at every stage.

If you're attending AIEC too and want to meet up, send us a message; we'd love to connect in Sydney.
