Important points related to Exhaust Pipe Supports Er****on

Here are the very simple but important points to be followed during exhaust pipe supports er****on...

1. Anchor fasteners should be anchored(hammered) to concrete beam , pillar and concrete ceiling but not to brick walls. One has to ensure that fastener is properly fixed inside concrete as per specifications, before going for another one. Pin type anchor fasteners are recommended to the ground level supports, whereas tapper or Fischer type anchor fasteners are recommended for ceiling level supports fixing.

2. In case of MS exhaust pipe er****on with in structure or building shaft area, a support at every 3 meters is required for vertical er****on of pipe, whereas if the pipe is vertically erected along building wall, then a support at every 2 to 2.5 meter is recommended. If the pipe is erected horizontally then a support at every 2 meter is necessary since supports has to hold/share the total weight of the pipe's layed. Upto 200mm round pipe 75 x 40 x 6mm MS Channel, above 200mm round pipe 100 x 50 x 6mm MS Channel supports should be considered. If the pipe is heavier and also series of pipe's to be layed side by side then a 100 x 50 x 6mm MS Channel box support or heavier size channel is recommended.

3. In case of constructing fly over bridge (near road crossing) from the bottom of the ground for series of exhaust pipe horizontal er****on then MS i-beam should be considered for bridge supports er****on. The base-plate of the each pillar of the bridge should be fixed to the foundation bolts grouted inside concrete.

These are very important points to be taken into consideration before er****on of exhaust pipe supports. Find More Concepts @ http://generatorszone.blogspot.in/

All about Expansion Bellow and Advantages

Usually Exhaust Pipe used will be made of MS - mild steel, comes with a quality of expansion and contraction in nature depending on the seasonal changes as well as mechanical changes caused by the generator during running and shutdown time. Expansion bellow consists of flexible SS made spring type arrangement and open flanges welded to both the ends. Expansion bellow fixed between pipe & pipe, pipe & generator turbo etc, acts as medium to adjust with the nature of exhaust pipe during hot, cold times and also observes the vibration generated when the generator is in running and also during nature calamities like earth quakes. With generator in running condition, exhaust pipe becomes severely hot, hence expands few millimeters, in such case bellow fixed between contracts itself balancing the pressure caused due to expansion exhaust pipe. Similarly when the generator is shutdown, pipe becomes cool & hence returns back to its original position, allows expansion bellow also return back to its original state. If exhaust pipe contracts more even than original state even expansion bellow expands to desired levels to balance the contraction of pipe. Thus by balancing the pressure created by exhaust pipe contraction and expansion, expansion bellow serves in many ways...

1. Helps in saving from causing damage to generator because of heavy exhaust pipe expansion.

2. Helps in not causing the damage to the building wall or self support structure where exhaust pipe is erected.

3. Avoiding passing of vibration from exhaust pipe to generator, generator to exhaust pipe, building wall and self support structure. Less vibration also helps in reducing noise pollution running through erected places like building walls.

Important note: Not just bellow, Exhaust pipe should be erected with sliding supports ie.., supports should allow pipe to contract and expand.

Concept behind Grounding or Earthing System

An earthing system or grounding system is circuitry which connects parts of the electric circuit with the ground, thus defining the electric potential of the conductors relative to the earth conductive surface.

In Simple terms, it is the method of connecting the metallic (conductive) parts of an electric appliances or installations to the earth (ground), hence it is called earthing or Grounding. In other words, connecting the metallic parts of electrical devices and machinery to the earth rod or earth electrode (which is buried in the earth) through a thick conductor cable or flat as a medium between electrical device and earth rod/electrode. The main purpose of earthing is to avoid or minimize the danger of electrocution, fire due to earth leakage of current through undesired path occurs in the electrical device.

Current carrying conductor (conductive wire or flat) should be properly insulated as such the current passing from conductive cable or flat should not come in contact with any other good conductor surface like other wires, iron etc. If any such thing happens, a person touching such area will face the danger of electric shock.

Earthing System helps in two ways:
1. Protects human life from uneven leakage of current caused in certain areas.
2. Saves electrical devices and equipment from getting damage from leakage current.
3. Avoids risk of fire arising out of current leakage.

Components Required for Earthing Connections are as follows :
(A) Neutral Earthing (It is earthing done to the areas where direct passing of current takes place) - copper cable & copper flat as per standards, earth rod, coated nut bolt washers, PVC coated copper tape(black sleeve), insulators, earth-pit chamber cover etc.

(B) Body Earthing (It is the earthing done to the metallic body of electrical devices & appliances) - GI flat as per standards, GI mesh connector, coated nut bolt washers, earth rod, earth-pit chamber covers etc.

Mobile Generators

In this model, diesel generator set is installed on a trolley with tyre's fixed to the trolley base, generator can be carried to desired place where power generation is required. This kind of generators have more scope in construction site and for rental purposes where there is a need for movement of generator from one place to other. Trolley's will be specially designed considering the size (length x breath), weight of the generator and safety aspects. This model of generator is moved with the help of other vehicle fixed with system to hold the lock of the trolley and pull the whole set up. Hence it is termed as Mobile Generator.

Why is Insulation Done to Exhaust Pipe ( insulation is also referred as cladding ):

Exhaust pipe insulation( cladding) involves surface of the pipe covered with aluminium cladding procedure. Material required for pipe insulation are Mineral/glass wool, aluminium sheet, GI chicken mesh, binding wire, GI Screws. Exhaust Pipe Insulation is done because of following reasons..

Where pipework is operating at extremely high or low temperatures, the potential exists for injury to occur when any person come into physical contact with the pipe surface. The threshold for human pain varies, but several international standards set recommended touch temperature limits. Since the surface temperature of insulation varies from the temperature of the pipe surface, typically such that the insulation surface has a "less extreme" temperature, pipe insulation can be used to bring surface touch temperatures into a safe range.
Acoustic insulation can prevent noise transfer by acting to damp the pipe wall and performing an acoustic decoupling function wherever the pipe passes through a fixed wall or floor and wherever the pipe is mechanically fixed. Pipework can also radiate mechanical noise. In such circumstances, the breakout of noise from the pipe wall can be achieved by acoustic insulation incorporating a high-density sound barrier. Detailed description of Exhaust Pipe Insulation will be discussed in future posts.

Detailed description of Acoustic Sound Proof System:-

Acoustic Sound Proof Treatment :
There are many types of sound proof models in use, most effective Acoustic sound proof treatment is made with the help of GI sheet, insulation wool mainly rockwool, GI mesh sheet and fixtures. Apart from this, there are many advanced sound proof treatments available like foam acoustic with fire proof etc.

In case of Acoustic canopy,Insulation material is filled in the panels made out of GI sheet with opening on one side(for filling acoustic material inside the panel) & using nut bolt system these panels are fixed one after other forming a box surrounding the generator, takes shape of a canopy.

In case of generator positioned in a concrete building room, these acoustic panels are fixed to ceiling and surrounding walls, covering all corners of the walls & ceiling except floor.

Fresh and Hot Air Louvers:
Since acoustic sound proof system is constructed covering the entire generator, there should be some entry provision for power cable, control cable, earthing system, bus duct, exhaust pipe, fresh air inlet and hot air outlet. One side of louvers can be seen in the picture below.

Fresh air louvers:
Fresh air louvers are the entry provision provided to acoustic sound proof treatment, for the flow of fresh air to generator, thus allows generator to suck fresh air for its functions. Fresh air louvers are provided opposite side of the alternator.

Hot air louvers:
Hot air louvers are the outlet provision provided to acoustic sound proof treatment, which allows hot air(produced by the radiator)to flow outside the acoustic sound proof treatment. Hot air louvers are provided opposite side of radiator.

Other Entry Points:
Acoustic sound proof system is provided with entry provisions for exhaust pipe, electrical works like power cable, control cable, earthing, busduct in the appropriate areas.

Sound Proof System - Acoustic Enclosure

As Generator engine produces high sound pollution during running, there requires a medium to arrest the high noise generated from device. Medium helps in avoiding spreading of the noise disturbance to the surroundings. Hence an acoustic sound proof treatment is constructed covering all sides of the generator, with entry doors fixed on sides (not to alternator and radiator sides). If the generator is positioned in the building and has sufficient space for the hot air to flow away which is generated by the radiator, in such case room acoustic treatment or acoustic canopy any one can be preferred. If the generator is positioned in the outdoor place then a acoustic canopy has to be constructed with entry doors. Acoustic sound proof treatment is provided with entry provisions for power cable, control cable, bus duct, earthing, exhaust piping, fresh air louvers, hot air louvers, fuel pipe line, engine breather outlet.

Simple Facts about Generators

Alternator and Engine:
Generators though made up of many components but in general a generator can be mainly categorized into two sections - one is alternator and other is engine. Alternator is a place where actually current is produced which is used for consumption and engine is the machine that operates at extreme speeds to generator current in alternator. Generally there are very few companies who produce both alternator and engine under same brand but in most cases a generator is a assembled product with different brand engine and different brand alternator positioned a single iron frame made up of MS Channel or MS Beam to become a single electrical device.

Anti Vibration Pads:
Anti vibration pads are the components fixed to bottom of engine and alternator before placing alternator & engine on the MS base frame. AVM'S are helpful in avoiding passing of vibration from engine to base frame thereby reduces the possibility of movement of generator due to engine vibration during running. In many cases AVM'S are also fixed bottom of base frame before generator is positioned on concrete foundation bed.

Diesel or Gas system engine:
There mainly two models of engine's - diesel engine and gas engine. Diesel engine is designed and manufactured to run with the help of diesel engine and Gas engine with help of gas.

LT and HT variants:
Generators are available both in HT and LT variants, depending on our usage & power setup, generator can be purchased.

Water Cooled and Air Cooled variants:
As most of us know that a running engine becomes hot as it runs uninterruptedly, it requires an intermediate to cool the engine continuously to keep the moment of engine stable for long continuous hours of running. Air cooled engine is mainly positioned in a place where there is sufficient space for the hot air coming out of radiator to flow away and vanish, Where as liquid cooled engine is used where there no sufficient place for air to flow away ex: building cellar, parking area etc, in such cases liquid cooled engines are preferred. In liquid cooled engines water is pumped from special set named as cooling tower, water flow is just like cycling process means cool water from tower is pumped to running generator to make the engine cool and hot water coming out of generator is pumped back to cooling tower.
