Nursing simply hasn’t got the place it deserves, more so in the Indian context. There are multiple challenges ranging from it not being viewed as an aspirational profession to the lack of recognition as an important constituent in healthcare delivery. Not surprisingly, they continue to get a raw deal from different quarters: policymakers, physicians, hospital promoters, colleagues around them and even the society at large.

In such a scenario, it is the nursing leaders who are expected to play a pivotal role in challenging and helping shape the ecosystem. Mediciti Hospital in Hyderabad engages Medium Healthcare Consulting to help increase revenue in a short time span.

To ensure quick impact on revenue, we decided to focus on sales efforts. After in-depth analysis, we identified cash and walk-in segment as one of the thrust areas and created a focused sales initiative on high-potential referring physicians. We reorganized the hospitals’ existing sales team and streamlines the overall sales process highlighting Mediciti’s physician talent pool in various specialties. It helped achieve over 20% increase in revenue in two months.

Medium Healthcare Consulting creates a new healthcare model – The Birthplace

To pursue its aggressive growth plans in healthcare, our client was keen to explore different healthcare delivery models, which could offer sustainable differentiation and hence, higher profitability and the scope to create a large footprint.

In line with the client’s vision and our focused factory approach, we undertook an in-depth study of the existing healthcare landscape and unmet potential across different customer segments. Based on our understanding of customer pain points, augmented with expert inputs, we evaluated various options. We finally presented the client with three shortlisted options. After intense deliberations, the client decided to go ahead with a focused obstetrics facility model aimed at the affluent section of the society.

An elaborate exercise involving one-to-one in-depth interviews with over 120 expectant women and women who had recently delivered was undertaken to gain further insights into their aspirations and psyche. While designing the ‘nuts and bolts’ for the facility and to deliver a memorable experience, these insights proved to be an invaluable guide.

A core team from Medium, along with the client team, was responsible for executing all aspects of the business plan. The criticality of having a great employer brand, a well-defined cultural DNA and a passionate team was understood from the very beginning. Medium assisted in making it happen through clear policy articulation and identification of the initial core team members. Currently, the team is working closely with the client in marketing.

Medium was engaged by Centre for Innovations in Public Systems to produce a report on the Best Practice on Use of IV Iron Sucrose Injection as Treatment for Severe Gestational Anaemia. Commending our work, Mr D Chakrapani, their Director, noted Medium "has produced a user-friendly, comprehensive and immediately deployable guide for replication.”

He added “I was particularly impressed with that, even though Tamil Nadu did not have clinical outcome data, the team met with a leading independent researcher to get appropriate evidence demonstrating the value of this innovative approach.”

CIPS was established as an autonomous body to help create and nurture a culture for accelerating and diffusing innovation in public systems.

Dr. Vijay, Engagement Manager at Medium Healthcare Consulting, presented at the 3rd International Conference on Transforming Healthcare with IT.

In a presentation titled “The Future is in the Past: Paper-based IT Systems that Work”, Dr. Vijay and Ember shared the results of a 4 month pilot project conducted with an urban chain of primary care clinics.

Drawing from in-depth interviews, it was clear that patients and doctors wanted an IT system that did not obstruct the doctor-patient relationship. Medium partnered with Palash Healthcare Solutions to build the customized platform that integrated digital pen and paper technology. The 5 key metrics selected for impact assessment all showed an improvement against baseline data.
