Microsoft Sued Infringers For Activating Illegal Software

The company has filed a lawsuit at a federal court accusing unknown AT&T subscriber(s) of activating pirated copies of its operating system and other software products. The AT&T account was tracked by the tech giant’s own cyberforensics team due to “suspicious activation patterns”.

Although Microsoft is known worldwide as one of the most pirated software vendors, the company doesn’t have a long track record of dealing with individual infringers. Actually, a couple months ago, the company even noted that piracy could sometimes even act as a conversion tool. Apparently, this didn’t mean that all pirates could have their way. The tech giant’s cybercrime center seems to be keeping a close eye on the unauthorized use of Microsoft’s software products.

A few days ago, the company has filed a copyright infringement complaint against an individual (or a group) who activated pirated copies of Windows 7 and Office 10 from an IP address assigned to the AT&T subscription account. You may think that pirated copies are hard for the company to detect, but Microsoft explained that it uses modern technology to track software piracy. The software developer described its investigative approach as cyberforensics: its team looks for activation patterns and characteristics that make it likely that certain IP-addresses are engaged in illegal copying.

For example, the company analyzes product key activation data received from users when they activate the software. This data includes the IP address from which the key has been activated. By the way, such reports are sent by users voluntarily. The lawsuit claims that the defendants have activated numerous copies of Microsoft software products, including Windows 7 and Office 2010, with suspicious registration keys. The company believes that those were stolen from its supply chain, then used without permission from the refurbisher channel, and more often than the Microsoft license permitted.

Now the company wants the court to allow it to identify the individual or a group of them responsible for the copyright violations in order to compensate the damage it has suffered. According to Microsoft’s complaint, it looks like the defendant is not an average user, but perhaps a person selling PCs with pirated software. Well, let’s see what the court has to tell the company.

Malware Spied On 10 Countries For 6 Years
Digital security company Symantec Corp has revealed they discovered an advanced, malicious software app that has spied on private companies, governments, research institutes and individuals in ten countries for the last 6 years.

According to California-based antivirus software maker, it found that a “nation state” was likely the developer of the malware, Regin. However, the security experts didn’t identify any countries or victims. It is only known that Regin’s design “makes it suitable for the long-term surveillance operations”. While the program was withdrawn in 2011, it resurfaced two years later.

The surveillance app uses a number of stealth features. The security specialists explained that even when its presence is detected, you can hardly ascertain what it is doing. Moreover, most of the components of Regin are still undiscovered, and there may be additional functionality and versions out there.

It was discovered that about 50% of all the infections occurred at the addresses of ISPs. The malware targeted the customers of companies rather than the companies themselves. Over ¼ of them were in telecoms, others ¬– in the energy, airline, hospitality and research sectors.

The antivirus software maker reported that the software had 5 layers, each hidden and encrypted, and each individual stage provided almost no information on the complete package. The threat could be understood only by acquiring all 5 stages. Symantec said that Regin used a modular approach that let it load custom features tailored to targets. Such method was also applied in other malware, including Flamer and Weevil (the Mask). Moreover, some of Regin’s features were similar to Duqu malware, which was detected 3 years ago, and related to a computer worm Stuxnet, detected the previous year.

As you can understand, cybersecurity is a very sensitive topic for businesses in the US, where there have been numerous breaches of major corporations and customer data. The government of the country and private cyber-intelligence companies claimed they suspect state-backed hackers in China or Russia. However, Russia and Saudi Arabia themselves made up about 50% of the confirmed infections of the Regin malware. Mexico, Ireland, India, Iran, Afghanistan, Belgium, Austria and Pakistan also suffered from the malicious app.

Google Offers Physical USB Security Key
The tech giant has finally announced a physical USB Security Key for two-factor authentication. The key is expected to ensure that users keep their accounts safe from intruders, but it has its own limitations. Users can buy a compatible USB from a third-party supplier and add the Security Key functionality. After doing so, they can start using it when logging in to Google’s services, including Gmail and Google Drive. The key will contain the code required for two-factor authentication, if the latter has been switched on.

Two-factor authentication is a popular method of security protection. It required both a password and an additional data able to verify the identity of the person logging in. Before, Google provided users with the second piece of authentication data by sending the code via text message or the Authenticator app. Now the USB key can be used without any input required from the keyboard.
