Reflections from the Field:

In India, we no longer live in a time where you have to abandon your spontaneous plan to toss a salad, make rasam or bake a cake because you were short of some ingredients. Now, we have a plethora of delivery apps that deliver groceries within minutes. While we assume that these apps might have adopted the role of becoming their go-to apps given the convenience and efficiency, my recent research conducting Home Visits in Bengaluru revealed a different reality.

During my home visits, I noticed that a few households stored groceries and semi-perishable items in bulk, prioritizing ‘economics over convenience’. These users were familiar with grocery delivery apps but used them with strategy and caution, reserving them for discounts or special offers they were aware of. Working within budgets and extracting value for money is no surprise when you deal with smart Indian consumers. Similar reflections can be found in a survey conducted by Yougov in 2021 which stated that a major chunk of urban Indians still prefer grocery stores over delivery apps.

Despite the availability of modern and convenient grocery shopping methods, a certain portion of the population clings to traditional ways. They reap the economic benefits of bulk purchases and follow common social practices, often maintaining monthly 'khataas' at trusted retail shops. Learned behaviors shaped by our society's historical practices still significantly influence consumer behavior in India.
