Aravani Art Project

Aravani Art Project Aravani Art Project aims to embrace the Transgender Community by creating consciousness, well being through art, awareness & social participation.

While the visibility of Transgender people is increasing in popular culture and daily life, they still face severe discrimination, stigma and systemic inequality. With a mission of attempting to reduce this in society, we bring about change in the way the society views the community. We advocate the idea of reclaiming spaces in the society by creating large wall mural projects to raise awareness a

nd to create a voice for the community. The projects mainly involve the community to collaborate with other artists and fellow society to join as we paint a mural together to create social participation and a safe space for conversations. Art meets activism as we paint about issues that prevail within the given geographical space. Through our projects we intend to capture stories of freedom, dreams of acceptance and hoping for possibilities. We hope to capture the cultural nuances of the community, since it remains very vibrant and un-explored.

*Aravani (derived from Tamil Nadu, India) is a chosen name to remove the innuendo of the word 'Hijra' , a non stigmatized name like that was the intention. The meaning of the term “Aravani” literally means a person who worships Lord Aravan. The project embraces anyone who wants to create and make a difference with the community.

🏳️‍⚧️ Watching trans women simply enjoying themselves on the beach and confidently owning that space was deeply moving.
It highlighted how, as a society, we have often deprived them of even the most basic freedoms—such as the ability to feel safe, joyful, and at ease in public and natural spaces.
Such moments reveal how access to joy, leisure, and nature itself is shaped by gender, stigma, and exclusion, and how reclaiming these spaces becomes a quiet yet powerful act of dignity, visibility, and belonging.

At the same time, there is also a difficult truth to sit with. Communities that have faced long histories of discrimination often carry patterns of survival that need un-learning too.
When support is continuously extended but learning, reflection, or change does not always follow, community work can feel deeply unforgiving. It reminds us that healing is not linear, and solidarity does not come without discomfort, patience, and hard conversations—for everyone involved. 🏳️‍⚧️

“Let everything happen to you: beauty and terror.
Just keep going. No feeling is final.”
