The Market of Lemons:

In the first year of my engineering studies, a professor taught us about the “Market for Lemons.” Seeing the condition of management system certification and consulting business in the world, and more so in my homeland, I couldn’t stop myself from thinking that the ‘Market for Lemons’ is playing with full force.

The Market for Lemons: Quality Uncertainty and the Market Mechanism" is a 1970 paper, by the economist George Akerlof which examines how the quality of goods or services traded in a market can degrade in the presence of information asymmetry between buyers and sellers, leaving only "lemons" behind. A lemon is an American slang term for a product /service that is found to be defective / unworthy only after it has been received.

Suppose buyers can't distinguish between a high-quality used car (a "peach") and a "lemon". Then they are only willing to pay a fixed price for a car that averages the value of a "peach" and "lemon" together (pavg). But sellers know whether they hold a peach or a lemon. Given the fixed price at which buyers will buy, sellers will sell only when they hold "lemons" (since plemon < pavg) and they will leave the market when they hold "peach" (since ppeach > pavg). Eventually, as enough sellers of "peach" leave the market, the average willingness-to-pay of buyers will decrease (since the average quality of cars on the market has decreased), leading to even more sellers of high-quality cars to leave the market.
Thus the uninformed buyer's price creates an adverse selection problem that drives the high-quality cars away from the market. Adverse selection is the market mechanism leads to a market collapse.

Recently visited an organization and was shocked to see Internal Auditor Certificates issued on my fake Letterheads with my fake signatures. Please note, all agreements and certificates of my company are signed and issued directly by me without any intermediary.

Being the first quality system consultant in the state, I always faced problem of plagiarism. A lot of professionals in the fraternity, ex-employees etc. copied my manuals, procedures, software, training material; however, it is strange to see people copying my visiting card design, advertisements, company name, email and website styles. While all these are unethical, forged signatures are unlawful too and will attract legal actions. I request professionals and organizations to refrain from such practices and suggest using original and authentic work.
