International Rabbit Day, and the kindest thing we can say is this — rabbits are not starter pets.

They're prey animals, so most of them hate being picked up, which is the exact thing children want to do.
Their teeth never stop growing, so unlimited hay is dental care, not a snack.
They hide illness better than any pet you'll own — not eating and not pooping is a same-day emergency.
And they live 8 to 12 years, not two.

They're wonderful. They're just not easy, and almost nobody is told that at the shop.

Visarjan day is the loudest day of the month, and dogs hear about four times better than we do.

Three things that make the biggest difference tonight:

Leave them home. There's no version of a visarjan crowd that's good for a dog.
Put a tag on the collar. More pets go missing on festival nights than any other night of the year.
Leave a bowl of water in a quiet corner for the streeties — the procession is moving straight through their territory.

If your pet is panting with no heat, pacing, drooling or trying to bolt, that's fear, not drama. Our vets are on all night.

Responsible Dog Ownership Day. Five questions, answered in your own head. No one's checking.

Do you know where your dog actually came from — not the shop, the mother?
Can you name the date of the last vaccination?
Is your dog sterilised, and if not, is the reason a real one?
Does your dog have ID on the collar?
Is your dog getting exercise, or just food and love?

Nothing on that list is expensive. All of it is boring. That's sort of the point.
