For claiming a deduction for bad debts it is not necessary for assessee to establish that the debt had become irrecoverable. Prior to 1st April, 1989 there was condition u/s 36(1)(vii) that debt should have been established to be irrecoverable. The condition was removed from 1st April 1989. Now it is just enough that a debt is written off in the books of the assessee,
