Anil Kumar, affectionately known as "Cassette Anil," was a fixture at my printing press in the 1995-2000. He was a daily client, arriving early each morning before we opened, his Bullet motorcycle parked at the entrance, a cigarette lit in hand. He'd be waiting to ensure his print job – was the first job of the day, needing them delivered by noon. Labels and CD covers for the music industry.
During that era, Cassette Anil was a name synonymous with music production. He was a one-man operation: designing, get printed, cutting, packing, and personally delivering his work. His dedication to his craft was undeniable.
However, his multi-tasking approach sometimes led to challenges. The final step – collecting payments – often fell by the wayside. Over time, these unpaid invoices accumulated, creating a difficult situation for my press and other vendors. Eventually, supplies would have to be paused until outstanding balances were settled.
It was from Anil that I learned the meaning of "rolling," as he called it – securing funds from various sources to keep his business afloat. During these periods of financial juggling, his usual morning visits to the press would cease as he focused on collecting dues and arranging new capital. Once successful, his familiar routine would resume.
Anil had a passion for gadgets. Whenever he acquired something new – a mobile phone (I remember his excitement over his Escotel connection!), a computer, or the latest Apple device – his first stop was always our press. He'd proudly show off his new possession to me and my staff. When asked about the cost, he'd invariably mention a generous gift from a friend in the US – a friend I never had the pleasure of meeting.
Despite the pressures of his business, Anil always wore a smile. He possessed remarkable patience and worked tirelessly to keep moving forward. As technology shifted to digital platforms and the internet, his business gradually faded.
We at the press, and I personally, will miss Cassette Anil Dearly. He was a unique and memorable character.
Rest in peace, my friend. Our prayers are with you.
