Manipur Conflict: New Dynamics Emerging Ahead of Elections
Reports indicate that Naga village guards and Kuki Cannivals (6 Nagas Butchered into pieces and allegedly cooked and given to hostages) are undergoing training within their respective areas of influence. Kuki armed groups have also appeared in several media reports alongside or in proximity to Indian security forces, raising questions and concerns among local communities.
Meanwhile, the Arambai Tenggol appears to be less active in direct fighting against Kuki armed groups at present, following the recent shift in the security situation around Imphal.
However, thousands of Meitei internally displaced people (IDPs) remain unable to return to their original settlements, despite changes in the situation on the ground.
With the Manipur elections approaching in the coming months, the conflict appears to be entering another sensitive phase. While the situation may look quieter in some areas, unresolved displacement, competing territorial claims, security concerns and growing internal divisions continue to shape Manipur's political landscape.
The coming months could be crucial. Peace cannot simply mean silence, it must also mean the safe return of displaced people, security for all communities, accountability, and a sustainable political solution.
