I reproduce below a paragraph from Chapter 14 on Fundamental Fund Analysis appearing in the book The Investment Think Tank edited by Harold Evensky and Deena B Katz -

In short, it's time for an integrated approach to portfolio construction- one in which the same analytics that have been proved to work for security selection are applied to basket of securities, such as funds, to the overall portfolio, and finally market monitoring. It's essential that these shared metrics be effectively communicated to all of the parties involved in building portfolios: the individual investors, the advisers, and the institutions managing money. Too often there is a breakdown in communication, and the investor is operating on one set of expectations while the fund manager is managing to a completely different set.

: For example, on numerous occasions in the late 1990's, an individual investor would approach me at a conference and say that if we got into a bear market, he sure hoped his fund manager would move to cash. I had to respond that his fund manager was under the assumption that her job was to stay 100 percent invested in large cap growth stocks at all times. When you have misplaced expectations, you are almost certain to be disappointed at some point. Using good communication tools to assure that all parties - the investor, the adviser and the fund manager - are on the same page is essential if we are to improve the investor experience.
