Puri was practising circularity long before circularity had a name.
For centuries, the Jagannath Temple has fed thousands every day: Mahaprasad cooked in clay pots over wood fires and served on banana leaves. Zero plastic. Zero waste. At scale.
Every 12โ19 years, the deities themselves are renewed. The old idols are respectfully retired, and new ones are carved from neem, sourced through a strict, accountable process. Not accumulation. Renewal by design.
And at the same table, every caste and every class shares the same meal. Equity, built into the system.
That's zero waste, closed-loop sourcing, and inclusive access, spanning the entire ESG playbook, quietly practised in Puri long before the acronym existed.
At , our SmartReBin network is pursuing the same idea, one location at a time, at Calcutta International School, DPS Megacity, Speciality Restaurants, Oudh 1590, Manipal Hospitals, RN Tagore Hospitals, and Howrah Station.
Different locations, one loop: collect, recycle, and bring every stakeholder, from waste pickers to retailers, into the value chain.
Turns out, we're not inventing circularity. We're simply catching up to Puri...one bin, one bottle, one banana leaf at a time.
