Ghostly Tales for Diwali and Halloween.

Since I love ghostly tales, why not dive headfirst into writing about them in my blog? The timing is perfect. Today is Diwali in India, and last night, the night before Diwali, was Bhoot Chaturdash…

I had hoped Cyclone Dana would turn out to be like the Y2K crisis — a lot of noise, but no real impact. More on those Y2K days later. Dana made landfall between Bhitarkanika National Park and Dhamra Port in Odisha last Thursday. Aside from torrential rain in Kolkata and other parts of the state and some uprooted trees and lampposts, the real damage has been to crops....

SCHOOLBOY SCHEMERS "Childhood Days" is Satyajit Ray’s autobiographical story Jakhon Chhoto Chhilam written in Bengali. It offers a VIP backstage pass to Ray's school years. It spotlights the eccentric cast and quirky locales that moulded his early life. Ray honed his smarts at Ballygunge Government High School, the Hogwarts of Kolkata (then Calcutta). This prestigious boys-only academy produced filmmaker Ritwik Ghatak....

CHRONICLES OF A 'GOOD' BOY' In the past, our schooling concluded at class 11, unlike the current system where students study until class 12 before pursuing a bachelor's degree. Additionally, an engineering degree course lasted five years, compared to the four-year duration today. In the naughty chronicles of my senior school days, between classes nine and eleven, there are more stories to share....

THE CHRONICLES OF YOUNG LOVE AND MISCHIEF When our joint family broke up, my parents, my brother, and I moved to a rented house nearby, marking the beginning of a new chapter in my life. I was six years old when we settled into this new home, where we would stay for about five years. It was during this time that I entered my preteens and experienced my first childhood crush on a girl living in another apartment in the same house....

RUM, RIDES, AND REVERED ICONS The day before yesterday was October 8th, Indian Air Force Day, which honours the servicemen and pilots who sacrificed their lives for the nation. This day also commemorates the establishment of the IAF in 1932. This day holds a special place in my heart and my friends from IIT Kharagpur. Kalaikunda, about 15 kilometres from our campus, has an Air Force Station built by the British during World War II....

OF FISH CURRY AND FAMILY TIES My grandfather’s family had hailed from Mymensingh, now in Bangladesh, making them proud Bangals. In contrast, three of his six sons married Ghotis. For the uninitiated, Ghotis are by birth from West Bengal, while Bangals are originally from East Bengal. The rivalry between them is legendary, especially when it comes to fish. …...

LAUGHTER, LOSS, AND LIVELY HENS: GROWING UP IN A JOINT FAMILY Ah, the dynamics of a joint family! It’s a fascinating blend of chaos, camaraderie, and countless stories. Growing up in a joint family was like living in a bustling, ever-evolving community. Our household was a vibrant blend of multiple generations living together. My grandfather had upper body paralysis due to a stroke he had suffered about fourteen years ago....
