Large multi-megawatt solar farms are increasingly being managed to maximize energy production using the latest technology to closely monitor the installation.

While there is currently some adoption of analytics and remote monitoring using satellite imagery, large solar farms are increasingly being managed as a whole using advanced Digital Twins - complete Computer Based Simulations of the farm to support daily decision making.

The high-end simulations are informed by a vast array of IoT data points gathered from numerous sources around the farm, and many major players within the renewable energy sector are now adopting such technologies to maximize generation from their solar portfolios.

These models allow for simulation, fault detection, and set point optimization without actually simulating the physical system of study. Managers can use these models to schedule the optimal time for inverter and string maintenance to maximize operation time, fine-tuning actual hardware to meet its full production capability.

'Where does Solar PV fall short? " - Solar PV can provide electricity for many processes ( manufacturing, space heating and cooling etc). However many manufacturing processes require thermal energy i.e. heating, whether it be baking in food processing, or heating up polymers in textiles manufacturing.

But don't worry - this gap in the solar technology portfolio will be addressed within the next 10 years. By 2016 we will see Emergence of Solar Thermal systems capable of concentrating sunlight to heat up water/steam up to 250°C. These systems can replace traditional fossil fuel based systems.

Drought rarely arrives all at once. It creeps in as a borewell that runs a little lower, a diesel bill that climbs a little higher, a field that gets harder to keep green. For a farmer, every one of those is a quiet worry.
