Mutual Fund

Mutual Fund

Mutual Fund

1. One Time Investment –
2. SIP – Systematic Investment Plan –
3. SWP – Systematic Withdrawal Plan –

One Time Investment

Mutual Fund

- Small Cap Fund
- Mid Cap Fund
- Large Cap Fund
- Multi Cap Fund
- Flexi Cap Fund
- Sector Funds
Funds

Large Cap
Mid Cap
Small Cap

Flexi Cap Funds

Sector Funds

Funds – Energy Funds
- Pharmaceutical/Healthcare कंपनियों में निवेश करने वाले Funds – Healthcare/Pharma Funds
Funds – Banking Funds
Innovation/Thematic Funds
Funds – Automotive/Auto Funds
Funds – Technology/IT Funds

Balanced Funds

ഉദാഹരണത്തിന് Tax Saving ELSS Funds-ൽ 3 വർഷത്തെ Lock-in Period ഉണ്ട്.

Small Cap Fund
Mid Cap Fund
Large Cap Fund
Energy Fund
Healthcare Fund

- Aadhaar Card
- PAN Card
- Bank Proof
- Mobile Number
- Email ID

Tax

Mutual Fund

What is a Mutual Fund, How Does It Work, and How to Start an SIP?

A large number of individuals are currently showing great interest in joining Mutual Fund SIPs. However, most people do not fully understand how it works or how to get started. This article explains how mutual funds operate, how to invest in them, and their tax implications.

My name is Bijumon Emmanuel. I have been in the mutual fund business for 17 years.
First, let us discuss what a Mutual Fund is. Broadly speaking, a mutual fund is an investment process where money is pooled from a group of investors. Based on detailed research and regulatory frameworks, a Fund House invests this collective money across various companies, and the resulting profits or losses are distributed in proportion to the amount each person invested.
For instance, suppose someone invests ₹100 in a mutual fund. That money might be distributed as ₹5 in a cement company, ₹5 in a steel company, ₹5 in a pharmaceutical company, ₹5 in a textile manufacturing unit, ₹5 in an airport construction company, ₹5 in a defense company, and ₹5 in an energy company.

In the case of direct stock investments, you need to personally study which shares to buy, when to buy, when to sell, the company’s financial health, its history, and its production capacity. In a Mutual Fund, however, a professional Fund Manager uses advanced technologies and expertise to conduct detailed research and invest in appropriate companies on your behalf. All you need to do is invest your money.

Investing across multiple companies significantly reduces overall risk. Just as a person diversifies their savings across assets like houses, flats, shops, silver, gold, rubber plantations, or cardamom estates—where a drop in rubber prices might be offset by an increase in shop rentals or cardamom prices—losses in one company within a mutual fund can be balanced by high gains in another.

Additionally, with direct stocks, there must be a buyer available when you want to sell. In mutual funds, you simply redeem your units, and the Asset Management Company (AMC) pays you an amount corresponding to the Net Asset Value (NAV) of that specific day.

Three Investment Methods
1. One-Time Investment (Lumpsum): Investing a single chunk of money at once.
2. SIP (Systematic Investment Plan): Investing a fixed amount into mutual funds every month.
3. SWP (Systematic Transfer/Withdrawal Plan):Regularly withdrawing a fixed amount from an existing investment pool on a monthly basis.
For a One-Time Investment, you should definitely give it a horizon of more than 5 years. If investing in sector funds, it requires at least 7 years or more. Therefore, funds needed in the short term should never be invested in mutual funds. If the invested value drops, top-up investments can be made.
If your goal is an SWP you should invest a sum and let it grow for several years before initiating withdrawals of a fixed rate (typically 6% to 8% annually). Under this approach, you will generally observe that the total invested wealth continues to grow even while you draw a monthly income.

Types of Mutual Funds

There are various categories of mutual funds, including Small-Cap, Mid-Cap, Large-Cap, Multi-Cap, and Flexi-Cap funds.
Before explaining these, let us clarify what the Sensex and Nifty are. India has roughly 8,400 listed companies across the BSE and NSE.
Large-Cap Companies: The top 100 companies based on market capitalization (the top 30 form the Sensex, and the top 50 form the Nifty). Funds investing in these 100 companies are called Large-Cap Funds. This list is dynamic—if a company ranked 115th rises to the 99th position, it enters the Large-Cap space, and the company previously at 100th moves to Mid-Cap status.
Mid-Cap Funds: Invest in companies ranked from 101st to 250th.

Small-Cap Funds: Invest in companies ranked from 251st to 500th. (Note: Some people mistakenly assume Small-Cap refers to small-scale industries, which is incorrect.)
Multi-Cap & Flexi-Cap Funds:These funds invest across Small-Cap, Mid-Cap, and Large-Cap companies. Flexi-Cap Fundsgive fund managers maximum discretion, allowing them to adjust allocations between small, mid, and large-cap stocks flexibly based on prevailing market conditions.

Sector Funds
As the name suggests, these funds concentrate investments in specific industries:
Energy Funds: Focus on energy-producing companies.
Health / Pharma Funds:Invest in pharmaceutical and healthcare firms.
Banking Funds:Focus on banks and financial institutions.
Innovation Funds:Focus on AI and emerging technologies.
Automotive Funds: Invest in the Indian automotive market, including auto financing companies.
Technology Funds:Focus on IT and software service companies.
Balanced Funds & Solution-Oriented Schemes
Balanced / Hybrid Funds:Invest around 60%–70% in equity and the remainder in government bonds and fixed-income securities.
Specialized Funds:Options like Children's Education Funds, Retirement Benefit Funds, and Tax-Saving Funds (ELSS) come with a mandatory lock-in period of 3 to 5 years. Most other mutual fund categories generally do not have lock-in periods.

A Smart SIP Strategy

If someone invests ₹10,000 per month via SIP, a prudent approach is to split it into ₹1,000 across 10 different funds scheduled on various dates of the month.
For example:
* 1st of the month: Small-Cap Fund
* 5th of the month: Mid-Cap Fund
* 10th of the month: Large-Cap Fund
* 15th of the month: Energy Sector Fund
* 20th of the month: Healthcare Fund, and so on.
A major advantage of an SIP is its flexibility: you can withdraw funds, increase or decrease your installment amount, or pause the SIP at any point. For instance, if you have invested ₹10,000 monthly for 20 months (totaling ₹2,00,000) and suddenly require ₹50,000, you can redeem just ₹50,000 immediately. If ₹10,000 becomes difficult to sustain, you can lower it to ₹1,000. If you face a gap in income for 6 months, you can temporarily pause your SIP and scale it back up when circumstances improve.

We provide mobile application access to our customers alongside opening their folio, enabling them to execute these transactions independently right from their smartphone.
Onboarding Process (KYC & Folio Creation)
We assist customers in completing their KYC and setting up their Folio online. To complete KYC, customers simply need to submit the following via WhatsApp or email:

* Aadhaar Card (for identity/address verification)
* PAN Card
* Bank Proof (cancelled cheque or bank statement)
*Mobile Number & Email ID
To set up the investment Folio, ID proof for the nominee is also required.

Taxation on Mutual Funds

Mutual fund taxation is structured similarly to direct stock investments:
1. Long-Term Capital Gains (LTCG): If units are held for more than one year before redemption, gains exceeding ₹1.25 lakh in a financial year are taxed at 12.5%
2. Short-Term Capital Gains (STCG):If units are redeemed within one year, gains are taxed at 20%, alongside applicable exit loads. (Note: Tax rules are subject to statutory amendments by the government from time to time).
Examples
Scenario A:An individual invests ₹1,00,000 and redeems it in the 13th month for ₹1,12,000. Since the capital gain (₹12,000) is below the ₹1.25 lakh threshold, no tax is payable
Scenario B: A customer invests ₹10,00,000 and redeems it in the 13th month when the value reaches ₹11,50,000 (a profit of ₹1,50,000). The profit exceeds ₹1.25 lakh by ₹25,000. Tax is levied at 12.5% on this ₹25,000 excess, resulting in a tax liability of₹3,125
Scenario C:An investor puts in ₹1,00,000 and redeems it in the 10th month for ₹1,10,000. Since redemption occurred within one year, the ₹10,00,000 gain attracts a 20% STCG tax plus the scheme's applicable exit load (typically between 0.5% and 1%).

Note for NRIs: For NRI/NRO account holders, taxes are deducted at source (TDS) prior to payout. Resident investors must report and pay their capital gains tax while filing their annual income tax returns.

India’s Growth Story & Investment Horizon
Investing in mutual funds offers every citizen a direct opportunity to participate in India's expanding economic story. As the world’s largest democracy, meeting the demands of our vast population for housing, vehicles, smartphones, and consumer goods drives strong corporate earnings—which in turn boosts long-term returns for mutual fund investors.

Driven by rich diversity, a massive youth demographic, and the largest population globally, experts project India to climb toward becoming one of the world's leading economic powers over the next two decades—mirroring the trajectory seen in rapidly developing economies over past decades.

Our growing domestic air travel volume, robust consumption patterns, and rising infrastructure footprint underline this momentum. Taking part in this growth through disciplined investing is a point of pride and financial prudence
