The retention value of the exported apparel surged 36.36 per cent to $28.5 billion in the financial year of 2021-22 from $20.9 billion a year earlier, data from the Export Promotion Bureau and the Bangladesh Textile Mills Association (BTMA) showed..............
"The higher retention value proves the strength of the country and the sector," said Mohammad Ali Khokon, president of the BTMA.

India launches AISA to boost apparel sustainability

With the theme of “compliance first, business next”, The Apparel Industry Sustainability Action (AISA) was launched in India.
According to The Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC), AISA aimed to boost the sustainable attributes of the garment industry which is looking to capitalize on free trade agreements (FTAs).

In an open discussion, global apparel brands and auditing agencies were together including PVH Corporation, Target, Bestseller, Marks and Spencer (M&S), Reverse Resources to advocate their growing drive towards sustainability and advised suppliers to begin the journey.

The meeting also witnessed support and guidance across borders including United National Environment Program (UNEP) and Denmark embassy, Fashion for Good, Netherlands; all bringing in their experiences towards assisting the Indian garment manufacturers to turn into sustainability measures in their manufacturing processes.

Naren Goenka, Chairman, AEPC said, “As we all know global garment production is forecast to increase by 63% by 2030. This spectacular growth brings with it an ever-growing global concern on the detrimental impact that this fashion industry brings as it is one of the most resource-intensive industries.”

Also, considering the growing consumer awareness on sustainability and the gaps in the global markets, it is a dire need for the Indian Apparel industry to dig deeper into the subject, he added.

The initiative took with the aim of Evaluation of the existing status of Indian garment industry, and to encourage wider pe*******on of these measures amongst the MSMEs (Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises).

Also, hand-holding these units with demonstrations and solutions. In terms of global platform, enhance the brand visibility of sustainable companies.

For this, taking necessary policy focused towards wider and smooth adoption of sustainability measures amongst Indian garment units at large.

Notably, The Government has been very proactive towards announcing various export promotion initiatives and signing various Free Trade agreements with UAE, Australia, UK, Canada etc.

Garment sector wants gas electricity under special arrangements

Bangladesh’s garment sector suffers greatly due to the ongoing energy crisis and high inflation in major markets. The export earnings target from the ready-made garments (RMG) sector for the current financial year (FY 2022-23) is unlikely to be achieved. Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has requested the government to ensure uninterrupted gas and electricity supply to the garment factories under special measures in a press conference on Sunday at the BGMEA building in Uttara.

In the press conference, BGMEA President Faruque Hasan said that the garment industry has been affected in two ways due to the gas and electricity crisis. Generators have to be run with diesel in the factory due to massive load shedding. Again the generator is breaking down due to long running time. It increases the production cost.

Faruque said the demand for apparel in key markets such as the EU and the US is falling due to the Ukraine-Russia war, global economic instability and high inflation. Export orders have been decreasing at an alarming rate for the last two months. He fears that exports may decrease at a higher rate this October. In this reality, there is little chance of achieving the export target by the end of the current financial year.

Farooq proposed to the authority to give additional gas to the garment industry by reducing supply to the fertilizer industry, “We can import fertilizers. But, if production in export-oriented factories continues, foreign currencies will continue to flow into the country, which will help in dealing with the dollar crisis.”

In the press conference, BGMEA leaders said that the price of fuel oil has decreased in the world market. They urged to increase oil imports and keep the electricity supply normal.

Informing about other crises and concerns in the garment sector, the BGMEA president requested to reduce the source tax in the garment sector from the current rate of 1 percent to the rate of last financial year considering the overall situation.

In the press conference, the BGMEA president highlighted the initiative of visiting various countries and diplomatic efforts to expand the export market.

30% of garment export orders deferred

For the past two to three months, foreign buyers have been putting their orders on hold and deferring them. As per our estimate, some 30% of orders have been deferred during this period. Some factories have not received orders for November and December.

And the situation does not look likely to improve before January next.

Besides, the production in our factories has also decreased by at least 30% due to a reduction in export orders. Many factories are now operating at 50% capacity.

Again, those of our member factories that are running on diesel because of the low supply of gas have witnessed a spike in the cost of production.

Cotton and yarn prices are falling, but there is no scope for us to get any additional benefits out of this. This is because as soon as the price of cotton decreases, buyers reduce the prices of clothes at the same rate.
In this situation, it will be difficult for many garment factories to repay bank loans in the future. The burden of loan interest is getting bigger, and some have got their LC facilities limit blocked.

The garment sector is now in a difficult situation.

The 37th IAF World Fashion Convention will be held next month in Bangladesh. On November 14, the conference part of the convention will take place at the Radisson Blu Water Garden, the conference hotel in Dhaka.

The conference programme will focus on solutions for a set of imminent challenges for the industry, including supply chain collaboration and purchasing practices, climate action, education and digitalization, and raw material recycling and availability. IAF partners, members, and projects such as the Apparel Impact Institute (Aii), the STTI, EURATEX, the London College of Fashion, and brands and retailers are among the speakers at the conference.

“IAF Conventions always highlight the importance of supply chain collaboration as the only path to a stronger and more sustainable industry. Bangladesh, which has grown to be the second largest exporter of garments is the perfect location to show what the active involvement of manufacturers in developing industry solutions really means in practice,” the International Apparel Federation (IAF) said in a media release.

Every panel at the conference features brands and retailers, manufacturers, and experts. The panel on purchasing practices and supply chain resilience and collaboration will feature industry experts John Thorbeck; Miran Ali, BGMEA vice president, STTI spokesperson, and managing director of the Bitopi Group. A speaker from a major retail chain will be announced soon. The panel on climate action will feature Tamara Wulf of the Apparel Impact Institute (Aii), Christopher Veit, CEO of Veit GmbH, expert Dr. Sivas Pariti and Suhjaat Ali, senior managing director at Target Sourcing Services. A speaker on this from a garment manufacturing company will be announced soon, along with numerous other excellent speakers.

The IAF Convention will also provide an opportunity to network during the gala dinner on the evening of November 14.
