Why Do Forging Dies Fail Prematurely?

A forging die can be manufactured from high-quality tool steel and still fail much earlier than expected. The reason is simple: die life depends on the entire forging process, not just the die material.

Some of the most common causes of premature die failure are:
🔸 Improper forging temperature
🔸 Poor die design and material flow
🔸 Misalignment between upper and lower dies
🔸 Excessive forging load or impact
🔸 Inadequate or inconsistent lubrication
🔸 Improper heat treatment of the die
Even a small issue in one of these areas can increase wear, cracking, deformation and downtime. Good die life is the result of good design, correct process parameters, proper maintenance and controlled forging conditions.
