Subject: Request to Reduce GST Rate on Marble and Granite Industry

Respected Sir,

With due respect, I wish to bring to your attention that the marble and granite industry is a vital source of livelihood for lakhs of entrepreneurs and workers across the country. This industry plays a significant role in the economy of states like Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Gujarat.

Currently, the industry is subjected to an 18% GST rate, which is excessive and inappropriate. Previously, this rate was 28%, which was reduced to 18% due to the continuous efforts of organizations like Laghu Udyog Bharati. However, even this rate remains burdensome and unsustainable for the industry. During the VAT regime, the tax rate on marble was merely 5%, under which the industry functioned smoothly.

The current high GST rate is not only hindering the growth of the industry but also giving rise to various irregularities and fraudulent practices.

The perception that marble and granite are luxury items is factually incorrect. In many regions, marble is available at a price lower than Kota Stone, which is taxed at only 5% GST. Therefore, categorizing marble as a luxury item is unjustified.

Furthermore, levying the same tax rate on domestic products as on imported marble and granite is against the spirit of 'Make in India' and 'Atmanirbhar Bharat'. This policy is harming indigenous industries while favoring foreign imports.

We earnestly request the Government of India to reconsider and reduce the GST rate on Indian marble and granite products to 5%, so that the industry may once again flourish and operate transparently.

We are hopeful that your esteemed office will understand the gravity of this issue and take prompt and positive action.

Sincerely,

Bharat Saraf
