Green Offices, Energy Efficiency and Employee productivity

With a Green Office, you establish a sustainable office that informs, connects and supports your staff to act on sustainability. While there’s certainly a feel-good reason to consider voluntarily upgrading the workspace with better choices in lighting, air, and overall aesthetics, many companies can be reluctant to invest in “green” unless it can be tied back to the ever-important factor – “Return on Investment”. When we consider a green office, some of the upgrades do save on energy costs, but what about the more innovative approaches (such as air circulations systems that measure and monitor C02)? There’s good news for budgeters on that front, too.
Data have been growing in support of “green” buildings, and a 2016 Harvard report gives numbers that should make any good HR manager do a double-take. Employees working inside green-certified building showed cognitive function scores 26% higher than their peers in non-certified buildings. They also had 30% fewer symptoms associated with “sick building syndrome”—such as “watering eyes; hoarseness; headaches; dry, itchy skin; dizziness; nausea; heart palpitations; miscarriages; shortness of breath; nosebleeds; chronic fatigue; mental fogginess; tremors; swelling of legs or ankles; and cancer.”
There’s also potential to make the exterior of the workplace an important player in the green game. Giving workers access to the great outdoors isn’t just novel, it’s smart. Patios, lunch seating with access to native flora, and employee gardens all have a role in nurturing the creativity and focus research has supported.
It’s wise to remember, however, that more of a good thing isn’t always better. Enlisting the help of an expert—whether it be in HVAC, lighting, or greenery—is still recommended.
There’s balance involved in any green endeavour. “We don’t try to create an indoor jungle. We try to focus on the high impact pieces that create beauty and functionality in a space, while bringing the benefits of softening and calming the space, enhancing air quality, and mitigating noise and conserving energy, thus reducing energy costs”

Refrigeration and Airconditioning - Small gaps digging a big hole to your Wallet

Understand these small things and save your wallet from the penalty of up to 60-70% higher energy bills and maintenance costs, you might be paying unnecessarily.

Refrigerators and Air-conditioners are meant to:
1. cool down a closed space of a specified size; and,
2. designed in order to handle the specified cooling load.

If they are stressed beyond there capacity,
1. Its efficiency decreases, causing higher energy bills, and
2. Early breakdown far before the designed life span.

So, don't be surprised by higher energy bills and early breakdown if you find any of these things with your cooling machines:

A. For Refrigerators:
1. Refrigerator door not closing properly; and,
2. loosed freezer door.

B. For Air-conditioners:
1. Windows have air-gap after closing them;
2. You keep the door of your room opened while operating air-conditioner;
3. There's an air gap even after closing room door;
4. A bathroom or any additional space with open air-vents is kept open; and,
5. Window curtains are kept open when it's hot outside.

These things might seem normal and negligible, but they are slow poisons to your cooling machines and tend to create a big hole in your wallet.

Are you overusing your AC??
and, worried about not to let it broken down??
or about the higher energy bills????

Well, here’s the solution!!!!!!

Due to corona pandemic, lockdown has probably increased load on your Air Conditioner as its been in use for more than 20 hours a day. At many homes, AC’s are already broken down while others are scared of the same.
Now, the point is how to reduce your Air conditioner’s load without compromising with the comfort conditions you want. Let’s just have a brief on good practices for that:

1. Routine cleaning of Air filters
a. clean the Air filters once in a week
b. a filthy filter could add 5% to 15% to your AC bill

2. Don’t set temperature too low
a. set your AC at around 26 – 27oC
b. even if your body is addicted to low temperatures, a
human body is capable of adapting temperature changes
within a week or two
c. you’ll cut up to 3% off your AC bill for every degree you
raise the temperature

3. Take full advantage of ceiling fans
a. fans can help keep cool air circulating
b. removes some of the burden from your AC system
c. using fans add ups saving of around 5 – 10% on AC
bills.

4. Use blinds and curtains in daytime
a. Bright sunlight is a big reason for downfall
b. sunlight raises the temperature of your home
c. use blinds and curtains to block the sun’s rays

So, here you are saving at least 25 – 30% on your AC bills, and raising your AC’s lifespan, that too without compromising your comfort amongst this critical summer heat.
Hope you will follow the practices to have a healthy AC system and wealthy AC billing.
Thanks for reaching us and stay tuned for more tips on saving your energy bills.

Heard some nerds saying that switching off lights will affect the electricity grid.
So, being the energy professionals this calculation is for those who really believe that the power grid will be affected by this event.

For any house the common equipment and their wattages are as follows:

1. LED Lights: less than 30 watts
2. Fans: 40 - 60 Watts
3. Television: 30 - 40 Watts
4. Home theatres: 20 - 30 Watts
5. A 300 ltrs 3-star Refrigerator: approx 100 - 150 watts
6. Geyser/Water heater: 1000 - 1500 watts
7. Air Conditioner: 1000 - 2000 watts

Now, considering 1 BHK house, the load summary counts as follows:
1. 5 X LED lights: 20 × 5 = 100 Watts
2. 4 X Fans: 40 × 4 = 160 Watts
3. 1 X TV with 2.1 home theatre: 30 + 20 = 50 Watts
4. 1 X 3-star 300 ltr Refrigerator: 120 Watts
5. 1 X Air Conditioner: 1000 Watts

A total load of these equipment counts as 1430 Watts, and the lighting load is hardly 7% of the overall load.

Also, daily common equipment cut downs include:
1. Air conditioners cutdown at mornings (70% of overall load)
2. Lighting and TV + Audio sets cutdowns at nights (11% of overall load)

Now, we don't think any further explanation is required to prove that the claims of affecting power grids due to switching off the lights are completely baseless.

Thanks and Regards,
Be professional, bring logic, prove your calculations and then better you claim.
