On October 28th, the Portuguese Parliament approved major changes to the Nationality Law, backed by PSD/CDS, Chega, and IL, with 157 votes in favor and 64 against.
📜 Key Highlights of the approved changes include.
🕒 10 years of legal residence required (7 years for CPLP & EU citizens)
🗣️ Mandatory proof of Portuguese language, culture, and history knowledge
🚫 No eligibility for applicants with criminal sentences of 2+ years
👶 Children born in Portugal gain nationality only if one parent has 5 years of legal residence
❌ Naturalization for children of illegal residents discontinued
⚖️ Law effective immediately after publication no transition period
