Turquoise Cotinga ( or in my head, the HOLY FU*K bird 😉💙) While eating lunch one day in Corcovado, my friend Chris announced to his wife and me that he had spotted two of the most beautiful blue birds and that we should get up and come check them out. Let’s just say we didn’t immediately jump out of our seats to come take look…after all, there are lots of beautiful birds in Costa Rica! After he insisted, we finally made our way over, peered through the scope & then I slowly thumbed through my guidebook to try and identify what we were seeing. 🤷‍♀️ After a few minutes, we announced that they were Turquoise Cotingas…at which point our guide - who had been on the phone - tuned in & glanced up thinking we were surely mistaken. Then we heard a very loud Holy FU*K from him as he ran over. We had no idea that we had been staring at one of the most difficult species to see. Carlos told me to run and go get my bigger lens which was back at the room. I thought there was absolutely no way that they would still be sitting there when I returned - but I obliged and made the trek to go fetch it. One had flown off when I returned but this one remained. Not my best image - but definitely a fun and amazing moment…a bird people search years for and and yes they are beautiful blue birds!

A little fluff of those pretty pink feathers. 🌸 Such a treat to spend a couple of January evenings up close with a large group of Spoonbills! This would have been unheard of here in South Carolina not very many years ago. Climate change and loss of habitat have pushed them further north and we now see them year round in the Lowcountry.
