What is OpenRAN, DRAN, cRAN and vRAN ?

1- D-RAN stands for “ ”

D-RAN is a classical setup where (Remote Radio Unit) and ( ) are co-located at every cell site. They run proprietary applications on specialized hardware.

2- C-RAN (Also ) stands for RAN or RAN.

In C-RAN the from several sites are grouped into a pool and located in one location. This leads to more efficient use of computing resources.

3- vRAN called also RAN or RAN

vRAN decouples the software from hardware by virtualizing Network Functions. It uses virtual machines ( approach) or containers (CNF approach) to deploy and on top of servers.

4- Then finally

The O-RAN alliance made a great job creating a specification for open fronthaul, mid-haul and backhaul interfaces.
This means that finally you can mix and match different vendors, and use different approaches without vendor lock-in.

Cloud RAN is NOT Open RAN

Over the last week we have seen presentations from many companies trying to tread gently around definitions, how to clarify the terms of “ Open RAN” and “Cloud RAN” . They continue to confuse and mystify the operators trying not upset vendor and customer relationships whilst protecting proprietary solutions and monopolistic market conditions,

1) “Open RAN” is not a technology
a. Open RAN is the policy principle of using open interface specifications to ensure vendor interoperability
b. Unless you can demonstrate interoperability across specified interfaces you do NOT have Open RAN
c. Open RAN solutions can be built with both hardware and software

2) “Open vRAN”
a. Open vRAN is with the majority of the RAN components built in software on a virtualized platform using disaggregated components verified and tested against Open Specified vendor interoperable interfaces
b. vRAN, unless it is stated using open specified Interfaces is a proprietary implementation

3) Cloud RAN
a. “Open Cloud RAN” is an architecture of deploying a vRAN solution with Open and demonstrated interoperable interfaces.
b. “Closed Cloud RAN” is an architecture of deploying a vRAN solution where vendor interoperability of specified interfaces cannot be demonstrated.

So let’s make sure we do not let the “Closed” marketeers of some large OEM/technology companies continue to confuse as an attempt to promote monopolistic solutions, slowing technology innovation for “Open Platforms”

If your solution is “proprietary” and you have no intent to be part of the “Open and Interoperable” ecosystem just say so – the customer will then decide.
