Lamination was always thought to be as preservative in action, but in reality it's more damaging and if done in a wrong way, even more so.

Preserving Memories, Frame by Frame

A glimpse from our 5-day intensive workshop on photograph & negative preservation, where participants engaged hands-on with the science and sensitivity required to conserve visual history.

From understanding material deterioration to practicing safe handling, cleaning, and storage techniques — each session focused on building practical skills rooted in conservation ethics.

Photographs and negatives are not just images — they are fragile carriers of memory, identity, and history. Their preservation demands knowledge, patience, and respect for original materials.

Workshops like these are a step towards empowering more hands and minds to safeguard our shared heritage.

Because every image has a story worth preserving.

Objects and archives hold memory. Monuments hold time. Collections hold identity.

This , we celebrate the tangible — the things you can touch, stand before, and feel the weight of history in.

At HPA, protecting India's tangible heritage is our life's work. Since our founder first stepped into the field in 1992, and through the atelier we built in 2011, we have devoted ourselves entirely to the conservation of objects, collections, and monuments — with the rigour, craft, and depth that this responsibility demands.

Today, HPA is home to India's finest conservation specialists. Every intervention we make is guided by one belief: that what survives into the future is only what we choose to protect today.

From wear to revival

This early Louis Vuitton trunk came to our studio bearing the marks of time — surface grime, abrasions, fading of the iconic monogram canvas, and corrosion on metal fittings. Each layer told a story of travel, history, and use.

Our conservation approach focused on stabilisation, not over-restoration — respecting the object’s age while enhancing its legibility and structural integrity.

Key conservation steps included:
• Detailed condition assessment and documentation
• Dry and wet surface cleaning tests
• Reduction of accumulated grime without disturbing original patina
• Stabilisation of fragile canvas areas
• Careful cleaning and preservation of metal hardware
• Retention of historic wear as part of the object’s narrative

The transformation is not about making it “new” —
it is about revealing its authenticity while ensuring its future.

Every object carries memory.
Our role is to protect it.

Did you know that old frames and backings can actually damage your art?
Here at Heritage Preservation Atelier, our trainee Kashish is demonstrating why. She is removing an unnecessary, fungus-infested backing from a litho print. These acidic layers often trap moisture and encourage fungal growth, which can eat away at the paper over time. Removing them is the first step toward a long-lasting restoration.

The Art of the "Adhesive Picker"

Removing aged lamination residue from gateway paper is one of the trickiest tasks in the lab. Because tracing paper is so sensitive to friction and solvents, we’ve moved away from the traditional crepe square in favor of a more precise approach.

We’re using a Silicone Adhesive Picker (sometimes called a color shaper) paired with cellulose powder. The powder acts as a detackifier, clumping the sticky residue together so it can be "pounced" and lifted vertically away from the fibers. This minimal-friction method protects the paper’s transparency and prevents the "burnishing" that often happens with more aggressive tools.

Conservation is all about the right tool for the right substrate.

Namita intuitively discovered a refined conservation technique!

Heritage Conservation: My (Jigmet Yangchen) Journey and Insights

I'm Jigmet Yangchen, an archaeologist and heritage conservator in training. I am fascinated about the history woven into our heritage. Heritage conservation allows me to safeguard the stories, traditions, and artifacts that define our identity. It promotes a deeper connection between the past, present, and future. My initial encounter with heritage and heirloom conservation occurred when I discovered a course at Heritage Preservation Atelier....
